Why won't Apple Earpods work with my android smartphone?

I have Apple earpods which work fine on my laptop and other Apple devices, but whenever I connect it to my Sony Xperia E4 the phone doesn't even register that there are earphones connected. Also, my phone recognises my other pair of headphones perfectly well, so I am baffled as to why my earpods and phone don't work together.

I know apple has the headphone jack wired different.

Apple uses proprietary hardware, and anything that says "designed for Apple" or "designed for iPhone" usually won't work properly on anything other than iDevices.

Have you tried any other android device? Maybe it's just Sony or your phone

I use Apples on my Androids with no problem.
