Why won't my phone allow me to send a video through text?

Does it though? (and yes, I'm seriously asking, not trying to be jackass...I don't have an iPhone to test).

Even for a 1 minute clip, getting a 1080p video down to 100MB is one thing, but under 5MB just seems nearly impossible, at least without completely rendering the video un-watchable. My hat's off to Apple if they do actually build this functionality into the phone, though I still believe that MMS is an antiquated protocol, and it is probably best to evolve away from it...and that's probably why HTC didn't include it. For what it's worth, I don't have the HTC One, but neither my current Samsung GS3 or my previous HTC Thunderbolt could do this unless I used the MMS setting when shooting the vid.

2nd: I agree, AT&T (and the other carriers) *should* have a better multimedia messaging solution. As I said above, MMS is highly antiquated and in this day and age, they could easily support a more robust solution that uses data networks instead of piggy-backing over the voice channels (which is what MMS does and why the file size restrictions are what they are).

Yes apple does it but you're forced to cut the video down to acceptable length. Through the text app takes a second. I don't care about apple though. I made a decision to stick with the android os since it does a lot more that I like but yes apples been doing this for years.

If you go back and re-read your first few comments, you irrationally called the phone "crippled" and basically said it was a complete fail because of the one feature not functioning as you hoped or expected.

It may not be right, but anyone who has been around smartphones within the last few years should know that when slamming a particular device, other owners will react as if it's a personal affront.

Well let me fix my earlier statement then. The HTC one as a whole is not a fail. But I stick by my original statement that they crippled their text app and software slightly by preventing you to send video with out it having on board compression without filming in lower quality. Clearly this was intentional on HTC's part. I'm happy to see there is a work around by using Chomp or other text services but still no on board compression. I'm a little more frustrated since HTC intentionally crippled my version (The Developers edition) by limiting mms through their stock text app at 300k. So add that fuel to the fire and I'm a little annoyed. But the phone as a whole is great and once 4.2 firmware comes through ill be switching the app I use for texting since I do a lot of group texting for job related issues and chomp at the moment doesn't do it properly. If other owners of the phone do not like my opinion than I apologize. Just don't read my posts but nothing is personal. It's a phone don't take my opinion on a product as a personal insult. Lol.

Surely they limited the developer edition to 300K because there is no way to know which carrier it will be used on. 300K will certainly send on any carrier that supports MMS, despite the fact that any file that small is basically useless.

That said, the iPhone must use some sort of server side manipulation to allow high quality video to be sent over MMS. Even on a high end desktop PC with instructions for such a task it takes a significant amount of time to apply that much compression to an HD video. There's no way a cell phone could do it "in a second." So I don't believe this to be a shortcoming of the One itself , just that it doesn't have the backend support.

This is not just a htc thing,, I have note 2 and it's the same issue. The quality of these videos are very high,,, it is the carrier that restricts sending videos this large through text. It is the same issue with any phone taking very hi Def videos,, it not htc crippling anything. Had the issue with my evo lte and now with my Samsung note 2. I just send youtube links. I don't have to store any videos in my phone and I can send beautiful hi quality videos through text to to anyone. Yes,, you can upload to Youtube and make video private.

Note 2, it's true, ,size is everything!

It's an MMS thing. And people need to get over it.

Well the 300k thing is a whole other issue but the options for larger file sizes should be there. This is a developers edition it shouldn't have restrictions. I should be able to set it with any service providers maximum limit considering most carriers are 1mb-2mb. Hopefully it will be fixed with an update. Seems a bunch of people are also complaining about it over at xda.

Again, the OP did not complain about carrier imposed size limits. He complained about HTC's exclusion of automatic downsizing.

If you ever did want to send a five seconds clip via mms, your Note 2 would automatically downsize your choice from your gallery. The ONE will not. A small complaint perhaps, but if you're going to make it, it is right to direct it at HTC, not at mms limitations.

My phone does not auto downsize. When making the video I have to set it to mms setting.

Email It using GMAIL.

I've tried this. I emailed it to my old iphone 4 from my HTC One and the video opened up very clearly on my iPhone4. It didn't take long to download at all. Maybe 45 seconds.

It may be inconvenient, but right now it works and it don't take long.

Wow. I apologize for my incorrect assumption.

That's why I was trying to say that this is not a "htc screwing up" thing,, it's pretty much the same across the board.. I am fortunate to have great lte speeds and it takes seconds to upload a video in all its hd glory to Youtube and then from there to text. Takes a total of about one minute.

Note 2, it's true, ,size is everything!

Yeah, I've agreed the complaint is very minor. But still it is HTC's doing if the ONE bothers the OP. Just like it's Samsung's doing if your Note2 won't do it either. My GS2 does it.

You sound like you really want to defend the limitations of the phone which clearly was poor execution on htc part. I don't care if my 10 second video that I want to send is good quality. I want the option to do it. I want the option to shorten a length of a video and text it right from my library and I want the phone to convert it to mms video resolution. Not some work around which clearly I know will have better quality. I'm not trying to share a film. I'm sharing a video clip that's not really that important. Wow! This is why some android users need to admit things to themselves. It's not the os that's limiting it. It's the phones and the companies lack of adding features when using a very capable os. Only htc is at fault. Stop bringing up the iPhone it sounds ridiculous. The galaxies and nexus 4 and pretty much every other phone also allow the option htc left out. The phone is crippled like it or not, admit it or not.

If you want to send crap looking videos to friends then stick with the iPhone my friend. I prefer to send quality videos to others as I have a higher standard, hence my choice of phones.

HTC One>galaxy>iPhone

handcent works to send MMS but you have to record the video from handcent... in other words open handcent go to the person you wanna send it to find the record feature record and send-

done!!

In this day and age, with technology I would think there would be a way to compress the video so it sends it in a smaller file format but when opened, the video is in the quality that the person sent it in. There is no reason why you can take such great videos if you can't share them. YouTube is ok if the people you want to see the video don't want to keep the video for themself. Honestly that's one if the big reasons I'll probably go back to using an iPhone. Everything is streamlined. Group threaded messaging with android phones is something that you have to turn on. I would think that would be a standard feature. Not something you would have to turn on. Who wants to get individual txt messages from a big group message you send out? If you can't share something, don't make it available on the device. Plain and simple.

The method you're describing is called a link. You can upload to any number of sources, and either share the link directly from the app or send a link via copy-paste to whomever you want. In addition to YouTube, there are many other apps that do this in a great way, including DropBox, Google+, Hangouts, Facebook, Google Drive, etc.

This. If you want to simply share YouTube is a great option that allows you to share with as many people you like without uploading the file more than once. If the video needs to be stored on the other people's device use Dropbox or similar. Simple, quick and convenient.

I am new to the HTC One. I came from the iPhone 5, and yes it annoys me that I cannot send a video through MMS straight from my gallery. I should not have to film in such a low quality to send a video. While the quality of a video sent through imessage would degrade when sent it was a much better quality than the HTC One MMS video setting.
