Hi All:

may i please ask why my wifi and 5G are BOTH showing up from time to time please? the correct situation is when wifi is being used, one would ONLY see the wifi icon on the upper right corner, and the 5G would just disappear.

this phenomenon also happened with my S20 Ultra.

it just doesn't make sense to me.

after some time, and that time frame varies, the 5G would disappear and only the wifi would show, which is the correct display when wifi is engaged, right?

thank you in advance. hope someone would know why.

here's a screenshot.

So you want to be connected to one or the other, not both? Why wouldn't you want to be on both?

If you have this on it can toggle between to it signal strength gets weak...(mobile data)

@jlangner: i can't find this page on my S21 Ultra under the Connections section. Nor could i find it under the other sections either.

may i please ask where i'd find this page? Thanks.

You on Verizon? I hear they have a "download booster" which uses both simultaneously to increase speed.

Also, if your internet connection is down it might be using mobile data because of that.

i'm on TMobile, and here at home, my wifi wasn't down when the 5G showed up.

very mysterious. something's going on but i just can't figure out what it is!

thanks for trying to help me figure this out - but no definitive answer yet to this riddle.

Long press your wifi button under your quick menu, then go to advanced settings. You'll see it there.

I am afraid I don’t understand the question in the first place.

The only way to have one or the other is to go into airplane mode to turn off data and then turn on WiFi, or to turn off mobile data.

You always have mobile data and WiFi going at the same time, but apps will use the WiFi data preferentially...

Unless there is a new thing with 5G that I am not aware of?

You got a misguided idea somewhere.

It was never either/or but always both.

Is this the first time... with Android, Samsung, smart phone?

It would be the same with any cellular device -- unless it lacked wifi.

iphone or LTE Surface, or tablets with cellular. Blackberry and every other brand.

Airplane mode allows wifi but turns off cellular. I had **** poor cellular and buggy wifi so I used to resort to airplane mode, and also had to do a quick off/on with WiFi at times.
A 2nd generation Wi-Fi 6 along with finding and removing a bad LAN RJ45 cable has made any issues I had moot.

Your wifi doesnt have to be down for it to show 5g and wifi at the same time. Wifi just has to have connection issues even for a few seconds, connection issues but you still be connected to wifi and not a total disconnect.

It's normal, don't worry about it.

This is literally every phone ever on the planet. Your phone doesn't disconnect from the entire network when you connect to wifi. That is why it will show both at the same time in the status bar like every other phone. 5g doesn't just refer to data, 5g is the 5th generation cell network that you are connected to.

If it disconnects from mobilewhen connected to WiFi network you wouldn't receive calls (unless WiFi calling is enabled) or texts. Sounds very normal to me.

ok, the consensus is that this isn't important - so thank you all! i appreciate it.

to clarify what i was trying to say, the following icons is the typical icons i see whenever i'm home using wifi, i.e. no 5G showing. (please see below)

once in a while, out of the blue, the additional "5G" shows up like my original post, versus what you see below. the 5G may be there for a short while, or it may be there for many hours.

my wifi is fine, as i'm very close to the wireless router and it works well even when i'm rooms away, so being typically merely 20 feet line of sight away, i think it may not be a wifi issue.

This is typically what i see:

I do get that also sometimes, it could be wifi broke off for a moment it would still show full wifi bars or a app that needed Mobile data .

If both images are from home then it could be you are switching bands from tower. You can look at signal strength and see big difference. Tower doesn't just have 5G. Could be going from 4G to 5G, etc.

My S21 is on AT&T and I just noticed the same thing today. I'm connected to my home wifi and I also see the 5G icon. Strange. I never saw this with my previous S10.
