Wifi AND 5G both on simultaneously! Why?

It's happened for me all the way since S8 series and on , one thing can check in WiFi settings>advance>when have weak wifi then mobile data not checked but there are also other things have to go over when I get time .

My use mobile data when Wifi is slow or unstable is turned on do most people keep it off does that help on battery? I toggled it off and back on now my 5G isn't lit up like before it's greyed out.

I keep mine off , I'm not sure on using battery unless mobile Data is not good but I would think no .

What exactly is the riddle? that cellular and wifi are on at the same time, like every phone since wifi came to phones?

You got a misguided idea somewhere.

It was never either/or but always both.

Is this the first time... with Android, Samsung, smart phone?

It would be the same with any cellular device -- unless it lacked wifi.

iphone or LTE Surface, or tablets with cellular. Blackberry and every other brand.

Airplane mode allows wifi but turns off cellular. I had **** poor cellular and buggy wifi so I used to resort to airplane mode, and also had to do a quick off/on with WiFi at times.
A 2nd generation Wi-Fi 6 along with finding and removing a bad LAN RJ45 cable has made any issues I had moot.

I'm not sure what phone you have that you don't understand what this guy is asking. This is my 5th Samsing phone that supports wi-fi calling. On ALL of them, when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network that has internet and Wi-Fi calling is turned on, the cellular network icon disappears. This is as it should be according to the users' guides. This issue is specific to the 5G Note 20 series, the native messaging app always looks to the Cellular network first. The icon appears but there is no cellular data used, it is actually using Wi-Fi. You can force the icon to disappear by disabling Mobile Data but you will have to turn it on again and restart, when you want to go back to the cellular network. But thanks for your thoughts.

Hi All:

may i please ask why my wifi and 5G are BOTH showing up from time to time please? the correct situation is when wifi is being used, one would ONLY see the wifi icon on the upper right corner, and the 5G would just disappear.

this phenomenon also happened with my S20 Ultra.

it just doesn't make sense to me.

after some time, and that time frame varies, the 5G would disappear and only the wifi would show, which is the correct display when wifi is engaged, right?

thank you in advance. hope someone would know why.

here's a screenshot.

Its under mobile app settings,,,,toggle off as apps will use data when wifi is turned on

Welcome to AC!

This is not specific to 5G Note20 series, it's been happening before 5G probably around S8 series

I suppose this may be true but I manage over 7,000 cell phones for our sales agents in North America; over 700 of them are S8s and S8+s. We have no reports of this issue on those models. The issue surfaced on the S 20 soon after its launch but was fixed in an update. But it's hard to completely *****-proof a phone, as idiots are so ingenious.

Hello , thats lot of cell phones :)
Most people who use the phone probably wouldn't report this happening its not like you losing service or something not working. Ive been long long time Samsung users of pretty much all their Note series and S series so ive seen it happen on my own devices and members here through the years, so just sharing my experience .

I just ran into this problem, and know exactly what your talking about. My wife and I both have Samsung Galaxy A32 5G. Mine did it and hers didn't. Same wifi and mobile network.
It can be changed in settings, developer options. Scroll down to, mobile data always active, and turn it off.

To get to developer options, go to settings, about phone, software information, build number, and tap on build number 9 times. That will make the developer options available in your settings

Im not sure the older models had that in developer settings, but if toggle it off then turn developer settings off it will revert back to always on.

My Galaxy s7 has the option. I turned off the developer option and did not see the 5g come back on with the wifi connected.
I was curious to check because I had not turned the developer option off initially. Samsung Galaxy A32 5g.Thanks.
