WiFi Speed Issues?

I have a Nexus 6P and a Verizon LG V10. I already know that the 6P does just about everythng faster than the V10, but today I decided to run side by side comparisons of wifi speeds using the Speedtest app from the Play store. I was surprised to see that no matter how many times I used the app, my 6P speeds were in the 90Mbps range versus 50 Mbps on my LG V10. Anyone else have similar wifi speeds? I use Comcast as my ISP.

Your speed depends on a number of things - your capped speed (what you pay Comcast for) and the path to the Speeedtest server and the traffic on it (which varies by the millisecond) mainly. Run 10 speed tests on the same phone and you should see differences.

If one phone is consistently different than the other from the same IP (try whatsmyip.org), it's probably the differences between the phones.

I understand. I have run the test at least 8 times with very similar results. I also rant the tests with my girlfriend's V10 as well and it appears the V10 has significantly slower wifi speeds than the 6P.

Don't know if this applies, but wifi speed was terrible with my V10 until I changed the channel on my router.

This is really odd... Here are my speed test numbers:

Here are the results form my wifes 6S+:

Is there any way to improve this? I wonder if its a Verizon / LGV10 thing? Do other V10s on other carriers show the same thing?

Doh... I figured it out... I didn;t turn off my cell data on the V10. Numbers are much closer now.

For me, the speeds are comparable to my other devices in the house. I got 50Mbps, my wife's Note 5 and son's Moto G3 got 54Mbps.

Now I must add that if I get a weaker signal, like 2 bars or less on WiFi, the connection seems inactive. I do not get that behavior with the other devices. I am running a crappy Xfinity supplied router which I would like to replace soon.

MY girlfriend's V10 is the AT&T variant and on my Comcast router is downloading at about 50 to 53 Mb/sec, just like my VZW V10. However, my Nexus 6P downloads at about 90+ Mb/sec on the same router.

Examples below. Just trying to figure out why the Nexus 6P wifi downloads are almost twice as fast, every time.

What protocol are you connecting to? I connect my V10 via my 5ghz Wi-Fi band. 802.11ac. My internet speed is capped at 36mbps. But I have connected to my routers USB based storage (USB 3.0) at speeds exceeding 100mbps. I have a Netgear R7000 router.

The phones Wi-Fi should handle speeds as fast as the 6P. As mine is obviously capable of going over 100mbps on Wi-Fi. And I'm pretty sure reason it didn't go faster is because I was limited by the speed of my flash drive on the router.

Look at the post above. Clearly 2.4Ghz. I have a 150/150 connection and 5Ghz fully saturates that. My guess - I would rule out the router.

I do notice on Aredubu's pics that the V10 link speed is 72Mbps while the 6P is 144. My V10 will not go higher than 72 as well.

I did find this: Slow Wifi - Pg. 4 | LG V10 Starting on post 30 gives possible issues with ipv6 on Comcast. I'm not going to change anything on my end to check as my phone is performing the same as the other devices (in terms of speed) in my house. So I'm not a good person to try this. Maybe someone else can.

Has to be a bug with router. My link speed is 390mbps

I would test 2.4ghz but I reserve that band for my legacy devices (802.11g) so my speed wouldn't be too impressive being that the band is running in shared mode. I can speculate though, the nexus 6p is probably running a different Wi-Fi chip than the v10? (not positive, let me know if this is wrong). I do know it's a different SoC. Just like different Wi-Fi adapters on desktops and laptops, different chips and configurations will probably give varying levels of performance.

I think I am going to go with a different cable modem and router, rather than the ones supplied by Comcast. I want what I am paying for.

That's always a good idea. The modems and especially routers from the cable companies almost always suck. Try getting a higher end router that has strong antennas and use the 5ghz band. With your ultra fast internet it's your best bet for performance in general. For a modem I'm using a Netgear CM400 DOCSIS 3. It has 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream. Says it's compatible with Comcast. I get amazing performance out of it. I got time Warner internet 30/5 package. I regularly see 36 down and 7 up with ping time in the teens. (single digits if I go wired on desktop). I got that paired with a netgear r7000 router. I get strong Wi-Fi signal even down by the corner of the street. Probably 250ft away

Much better router made a difference. Still, the wifi antenna seems to be different between the 2 devices.
