WiFi Troubleshooting

I have the same router with the same problem.

Im using a D-Link DIR-615 and i am having the same issues. I did get it to work on no security for a few minutes. Then i disconnected and tried again. This time it kept dropping connection. Where do i find the turn off MAC address filtering option, SSID, and encryption settings?

By the way i know nothing about routers. I always do the auto install except for the password.

I'm running a linksys WRT54GL (with custom firmware)
WPA2 with encryption
working fine on 2 X's

First, thanks for creating this thread. My results so far:

Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato 1.28 firmware (same with Tomato 1.27)
Wireless Mode: Access Point, G
SSID: Broadcast

Droid X results with the following security settings:
Open (disabled): successful
WPA Personal, TKIP shared key: fail
WPA2 Personal, TKIP shared key: fail
WPA/WPA2 Personal, TKIP shared key: fail
WPA/WPA2 Personal, AES shared key: fail

On each failed attempt the Droid X says the password is incorrect, although I'm careful to copy/paste the password in and make sure no spaces are created.

@groundhound - I have the same router and setup as you
running wpa2 / aes with no issues.

I'm running a Dlink DIR655 in mixed mode, no security and SSID broadcast. I am able to connect but I frequently lose connection. I was hoping for the patch today to see if it fixed my problem but it hasn't been released yet.

I have the same router with the same problem.

I realize you probably don't want to lose your 802.11n functionality, but are you both running in Mixed Mode and/or is there an option to turn that off? That would be the next step I would try for troubleshooting purposes. Also, I had that router as well, and I remember reading that their latest update was causing a lot of issues. People were trying to roll back to a previous version because it was so bad. This was several months ago though, so maybe they have a more recent update that fixed the issue. The problem everyone was complaining about is just as you guys have described. And no, today's X patch did nothing to address WiFi connectivity.

Same advice as above. All these settings are in the User Manual. Just search it for the keywords you mentioned above.

Don't forget to check your logs. And make sure the router reboots after you change a setting. The first day, when I couldn't get my X to connect to my router, the logs repeatedly said "Connection from MAC address _______ refused", or something to that affect. I rebooted the router and found that all the changes I had messed with were no longer there, and I had to redo them in the router. After I redid them, the X was able to connect.

Sorry but if I have to deal with the hassle of messing around with the settings on my Router just for my phone to connect(Which I didnt have this issue with my Inc and moto Droid) then that to me, is a joke and bad development on Motorolas part.

I agree. My Motorola Droid worked fine. It's ridiculous I should have to change my router from WPA2 Personal to WPA.

enterprise-class avaya (proxim) access point here...

working with several laptops for years using hidden SSID and 802.1x/WEP (and lately .1i/WPA) authentication via radius server to a windows domain controller.

X connected using .1x on the first try, then not again. have been backing down the settings until consistent connection achieved.

enabled SSID broadcast. very inconsistent, but did connect a time or two. nothing obvious in the syslog output from the AP and DC regarding authentication failures.

removed .1i support (so .1x only). same results. does connect rarely.

removed .1x support and added WPA-PSK (AP is old enough that WPA2 is not an option). seems solid.

waiting for OTA update. plan to re-hide SSID & retry .1x.

pretty poor wifi implementation, imho...

Thanks for the reply. I don't see anything associated with a failed login attempt in my logs, but when I do try to connect with the Droid X I briefly see its MAC address appear in my connected device list but no IP is assigned and it dissappears after about a second. I've rebooted the router repeatedly after each change to no avail. I have no trouble connecting to my router with a Win XP laptop, a Ubuntu laptop, and an iPad.

Weird. My router has no problems connecting with my other wireless devices, just with the Droid X. Are you using any non-default values in your Tomato advanced wireless settings?

I'm grasping at straws, but I wonder if you could use DHCP reservation to manually assign an IP in the router settings, and in the X's settings for your router.

I also wonder if your DHCP range has enough addresses configured to support the # of devices you are connecting to it (I'd be surprised if it doesn't).

Is WEP an option? I don't see it listed in the list of protocols you tried.

Security experts will balk at this, but I never use encryption. I disable it entirely and turn off broadcast SSID and turn on MAC address filtering. I have a lot less problems and performance is better. You'd literally have to be inside my house to be able to sniff any of my packets, and the packets going through the air in my network aren't very interesting anyways. So hackers... knock yourself out.

Edit: I'm not sure about the router you have, but the X only support 802.11n in the 2.4 GhZ range. I've had the problem you're describing when I tried to connect my phone to my router (which has 2 radios) the 5GhZ radio.

Also, if it were me, I would turn off all the other devices that are connected to your WAP, while troubleshooting.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already tried assigning an IP to the X's MAC, but that didn't work either. That's actually the way I prefer to run all the other devices on my network, so there's plenty of room in my DHCP range. My router does not support 802.11n so I'm using g. I'm not willing to run a security protocol less than WPA, for a number of reasons that would be OT here - I only tested the open setting for a brief period to confirm that the problem is associated with security settings in some way. The only other radio devices in the same room as the router are a DECT 6.0 phone and a Bluetooth dongle, neither of which should cause a problem.

I haven't had any of the reported problems. I turned wifi on, found my home network, put in my security key and it connected without a problem. That's what I use when I'm at home. I haven't tried connecting to outside networks, but will give it a try. I have a netgear router.

Success! Well, not quite, but a better understanding of what the problem is. My normal key contains many non-alpha numeric characters. If I use a simple key (read: less secure) with just letters and digits, I can connect.
Edit: Turns out that the problem was inadvertent spaces after all. I didn't spot it because with non-alpha numeric characters the spacing between some characters can be deceiving. The spaces were created in the copy paste function on the Droid X, at line breaks. So, bottom line is my issue was not wifi related but Droid X text editing related.

I did check my firmware version and there was an update last month that I hadn't installed. I was running 133NA and I'm now running 134NA. The newer firmware did not seem to help but I'll keep an eye on it.

I am running mixed mode (N,G and B). I'm really not willing to drop to G as I stream HD content and I can barely keep up streaming on N. I will give it a shot temporarily if I continue to have the problem.

Is there a trick to downloading via wifi? Im connected but nothing downloads unless i turn wifi off.

After messing around with my Netgear WPN824 v3 Rangemax (A very common router) router for a LONG time I was finally able to change some settings. This might be for all other newer netgear routers as well. I was already using WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK Security settings. The 2 settings I changed to get my Droid X to successfully connect were:

1) Changing the NAT Filtering to OPEN under the Advanced>WAN Setup Menu
2) Uncheck Enable WMM in the Advanced Wireless Settings option

Anyways, hope this helps some people! This can be added to the router troubleshooting post as well.

Not sure if this will help anyone else but for the time being it has fixed my problem with the constant connecting/dropping. I tried everything from changing security settings to a hard reset of the X with no luck. Then I upgraded my firmware on the router and it has held a continious connection for a little over an hour now.

Netgear wireless N router "WNR2000"

Security Options (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK)
I tried resetting the router and even leaving it open with no security. I notice it is a little faster with out security but it still will lose connection with online apps.Such applications as Imobsters. It keeps loading or showing a .php link to click on. I connect with 3G an it works fine. I even connect to my neighbors linksys which is down stairs and it works fine.

BTW:My ipod touch does not have any issues with my netgear. I play Imobsters on it also. I have the latest firmware for the netgear.
