OK, I can confirm that the Samsung Rugged case DOES NOT work on the Samsung charger that I got with my Note 8. I put it on the charger and the blur light on the charger comes up and then immediately goes off. Without the case it charges without issue. I need a thinner case it would appear.
This sounds completely believable.
My wife and I each got Note 8s, and we each got one of the fancy chargers shown above at the same time as we bought the phones. We also got big, clunky, Pelican cases for our phones. This was at an AT&T store. We got a lot of other stuff, too, so we got $20 off of each of the chargers which brought them down to $60 or so, which is still pretty darned steep IMO.
Anyhow, neither of our phones will charge with those chargers and the Pelican cases on unless you carefully set the phone on the charger in "landscape" orientation and really get it in just the right spot. I'm thinking of returning the chargers since we kind of like the cases.
So this makes good sense because for the wireless charging to work, the power has to couple from coils in the charger to coils in the phone, and magnetic fields drop off rapidly as you increase the distance. Basically, you can think of the wireless charging as behaving like a transformer where the primary windings are in the charging base and the secondary windings are in the phone itself. The coupling is pretty loose even with a "naked" phone placed directly on the charger. With a thick case, it very likely drops off a lot. The instructions for the chargers even say to take the case off of your phone before using it.
And that pretty much defeats the purpose of wireless charging. If I had to pry the case off of the phone every time I wanted to charge it, that would be a complete pain! The idea of wireless charging is to make things more convenient, not to make it more of a hassle!
I suspect a thinner case, and certainly one NOT made with any ferrous metals, or perhaps any metal at all between the phone and the charger might work. These Pelicans are plastic, but they do hold the back of the phone away from the charger more than a thinner case would.
Hey, it was worth a try.
