Wireless charging... What in the world happened to that?!

Man, I loved my touchstone with my palm pre plus! Still have the little bugger. Wish palmOS had taken off - no insult to android here - but it was super intuitive and a work of art. Just genius.

On a side note, I recently read a few articles about how hybrid cars (allegedly) emit a lot of electromagnetic radiation, which got me thinking about phones, and wireless routers and now wireless charging.

If it's not terrible for the environment and people and animals, I'd want wireless charging for sure!

doesnt it waste a lot of electricity? (i understand how inductive transfer of electrical current works but surely theres more waste than using a wired charger?)
a normal charger/transformer, has to induct electricity once but this does it twice..

I think you are getting "conduction" and "AC-DC conversion" confused. But yes, induction is only about 80% efficient compared to the micro-usb wired connection from what I have read. So, since the average yearly cost of electricity to operate a Galaxy S3 is $0.53, you are looking at about an $0.11 per year penalty to use the inductive charge, in about 25 years you will be able to buy a cup of Starbucks coffee for the price of that extra electricity.:D

No, they are right... the first stage of the conversion is a step down transformer which uses induction through an iron core (so more efficient than inductive charging but still induction) to reduce the incoming a.c. to a manageable level before rectifying and smoothing to create the d.c.

I think all android users and developers should play with a palm pre a little. So many amazing things that should have been game changers. Inductive charging (coupled with everything else) makes me want the S3.

I think that you are absolutely correct. I still don't understand why it has taken inductive charging so long to catch on. I am still on my Pre (Until October 29th at least) and there are so many things that I am going to miss. The inductive charging being one of the things on the list. As one poster put it, If you don't know, you don't know. One of the (many) reasons that I am coming to Android instead of iOS is Matias Duarte. The man has Vision!

Bleh, I'm not super down to drop $90 on an induction system I still have to set my phone on. Seems like a waste of money when this thing comes with a 6 mile long charging cable lol.

If you buy the Palm TouchStone & Pre/Pixi back and have the ability to solder, you can get your SIII charging in under 15 minutes, and $15.00. Totally worth every minute and penny. The reason I chose the SIII over the One X.

Being an ex-Pre user, induction charging holds a special place in my heart. I still whip my original Palm Pre out just to play with it. Every time I see one of my 3 induction charger bases for it, I just wish someone would make a new phone use them out of the box. I LOVE the idea!

My idea of a "smart" induction charger would be a combo of NFC and induction charger. The charger pad would sit idle, drawing absolute minimum power until an NFC/Induction capable phone was put on it. The phone would send a message to the pad via NFC to turn on the charger, which it then starts to charge the phone. Every 60 seconds or so, the pad would poll the NFC connection to make sure the phone is still there, if it is, keep charging. If the phone isn't found, go to back to sleep.

The phone would also have the ability to send a message via NFC to say that its fully charged and put the pad into a trickle charge mode (but still poll for no phone every so often).

In addition, the charging pad could be programmed just like any other NFC tag so you can make one pad be the "bed side" pad and another be the "office desk" pad. This would allow you to make your phone react to each pad in a unique way, like turning on the screen to a minimum brightness with a clock on it for the bed side.

If someone was to make this, you better believe I would buy it.

They have something like this that's very similar. Not quite all the NFC capabilities that you want (which would be awesome BTW) but there is communication (via RFID). Check out these induction charging systems, specifically the Powermat - Is Inductive Charging the Way to Go? | Apartment Therapy

nah its induction mate. it "crosses" a tiny gap between the two coils inside the transformer?

lol know what u mean about the tiny amount of extra power but it all adds up and how many people here always switch off their charger when not in use? :p

The funny thing for me is the people that really want this are by and large former and current Palm Pre users. Myself included.

I personally don't want that much electricity radiating in my space. Besides you would end up overcharging much easier.

False. The phone and the TouchPad.... Neither of them overcharge.. (the battery itself doesn't allow it) As for electricity radiating your space.. Fairly insignificant amounts... considering you have no problem talking on your cell phone beside your head. And for those that mentioned about a higher electricity bill (earlier in the thread)... Who are you trying to fool? Ok your bill goes up by a whopping dollar.... This unit uses no more electricity than an alarm clock.... Thanks for the chuckles though. :D

Edit for those interested in modding their SGS3, and all you need is a Touchstone, and a back off an old phone. Tear out the coil and make your own. I seriously considered it, but I don't think it will work with the Defender. A shame with 4 of them collecting dust.. There's a good thread somewhere on this site on how to do it. If anyone knows it works for sure, I'll be all over it.

@Juanus nice avatar :) I'm hoping Dan gets it working soon!

i kinda meant more about the environment than the cost of it but hey.. the US dont think twice about destroying the planet for the sake of a minor luxury do they? :p

and yeah i grew up directly under a main power pylon and i havent grown an extra head.... yet lol :)

Lol hey. I live in Canada... Not the US.. I recycle, and I shut lights and tv off when I'm not using them, and I use a reusable coffee cup.. I do my part... I think I can get away with using a 1 amp inductive charger without killing the planet! :D

theres NON-REUSABLE coffee cups??????
maybe i should have said North America lol soz.
dunno if Canada is quite as bad as the US though :)

Have any other America hating statements? Do some investigation on the amount of pollution and waste many other countries who have NO regulation on factories and industry put out.
