Won't buy future Galaxy S because Fascinate doesn't have Froyo?

Well, I've been following this discussion here and elsewhere for a couple weeks now, and I have a theory about who leaked the "unofficial" upgrade, and why. After all, isn't Android open-source? Hint: If VZW has a problem with Samsung fees or contracts, why not "support" your Samsung customers with a small "leak", so they can upgrade and customize away. To quote NASCAR: "Have at it, boys!"

I have upgraded to Froyo this last weekend and love it the phone works great. Use Odin it only takes about 15min. Just go to the rooting part of this forum and fallow the directions in all about rooting then enjoy you phone.

I bought my fascinate as a stop gap between my OG Droid and the new LTE phones. After dealing with the lack of support and still managing to get Froyo(EB01), and for the most part debing my phone, I could give a crap about Verizon and their inability to commission good software. I will buy the hardware I want and work around the rest. So far Samsung has been the best in the hardware department and I love my Fascinate. So unless they drop a real stinker in the LTE phone category, I'm leaning towards giving them my future business. However I would love to know how mouser991 get's 25 hours out of his/her battery.

Well this is what I have:

Stock EA28 rooted with this kernal (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6088006/stupidfast-test-v1.76.zip) installed by me courtesy of DroidXcon and Braydon 525. (sorry I don't know how to post links)

Screen timeout set at 15 seconds, brightness turned down, and powersaving mode on. I rarely use gps, bluetooth or wi-fi. My phone actually gets used extensively with phone calls, text-messaging and gmail between 7am and 10pm daily. It is on standby till the following morning and I will usually charge it around noon each day with a car-charger. So I guess 15-20 hours of regular use and the rest on standby.

Battery life is part of the reason I have not flashed Froyo. It seems to be a common theme in most threads after flashing Froyo that battery life is not near as good as it was with stock EA28.

Just my 2 cents:p

The fact is until we get the source for the 2.6.32.9 kernel, battery life won't be as good as previous builds because there won't be any custom kernels. Once we have the source you will see undervolted, over clocked, voodoo,etc... And that will mean better battery life

remind me when my contract is up to never buy a samsung phone again

i still cant believe an official version of froyo hasn't been released when other phones are getting updates of gingerbread already.

the lack of progress is telling that we won't get froyo for months.

It does not bother me as I am running Froyo and the bonus to that is that I have no bloat crap software on my phone.

I recall scratching my head when I bought the phone and the sales rep told me I could not remove the apps I did not want there.

Then I came here and BANG bloat crap gone and 2.2 :D

I own 2 samsung phones and i love them and coming from a DX and father owns a OG droid i do have a basis to comparison. I will def be getting another samsung as soon as it is released. So i wont be reminding anyone, not to buy this... also i love froyo for the fascinate it has alot of features that others dont.

You certainly have that option and the freedom to not buy another Samsung phone. Just wanted to give you some info to consider when making that decision. Those of us in these forums who have rooted our phones and are using the superclean 2.9 ROM are running a functional version of Froyo on our Samsung phones right now. The superclean ROMs have stripped away all the Verizon bloatware. I don't know if it's just Samsung or just Verizon, or a combination of the two, but from everything I've read I tend to agree with what I've seen to be the majority in laying the blame at Verizon's feet. Just my opinion.

I dont usually get into the whos fault is it debate but heres my opinion. When I had Sprint and WebOS we had such a lag at getting updates. Everyone was mad and it was constant talk about leaving Sprint and WebOS. Well then I went to Verizon and the updates got even slower. We were like last in line (actually I think ATT was) to get the update for the Pixi Plus. We all went and attacked VZW on Twitter daily and eventually the update came and it shut us all up. Now that Ive left WebOS I see the same deal here with the Fascinate. I really feel the bottom line is no matter what carrier and what phone you have updates are going to be annoying and waiting just sucks. Yeah you can root and get it but I think the majority of people will agree we shouldnt have to do that. The carrier and the manufacturer should make sure we get it in a decent time frame. Complaining wont make it come faster but I get your frustration and the need to express it. In the end though if you love the phone I truly feel waiting is worth it. If you dont love it enough to wait then even the update isnt going to change your mind. Theres probably a phone out there that suits your needs better/is more attractive to you so I say go for it and get that phone. Just remember eventually you will likely be back in the waiting game limbo with that device just like you are right now with the Fascinate and FROYO.

Shouldnt have to root, but, eh... phone was great before , smoother than my DX for sure. firmware updates are not that important to me...i was running XP all through vista, an just recently maybe within the month switched to windows 7.

Samsung makes great hardware which it why I bought it. I didn't buy the Fascinate for the Froyo update as I liked the way it felt and performed against the Droid branded devices. Blur is a joke and even with 2.1, the Fascinate could outperform most running 2.2. Running Super Clean 2.9.1 has made it even better but the Thunderbolt is tempting. Wanted to wait for something dual-core, LTE and hopefully in the 4" form factor but the $29.99 unlimited plan may be too much to pass up. Not quite fond of the battery life HTC in infamous for or the location of the usb port but guess we'll see.

I have froyo on my fascinate and love the way it runs, but after seeing the way samsung operates and treats its customers, I will probably be purchasing my phones from other companies in the future.

I'd definitely look at Samsung for next phone. I like the 4" screen size, the display is fantastic, and it is easy to use.

I consider myself only moderately technically astute, but I'm rooted, running Froyo (SuperClean 2.9.1) with all bloatware removed. It is a fantastic phone with this setup and quadrant score is much better than average smartphone.

If you're only beef about phone is lack of Froyo, then you need to just read enough forums and follow directions and root the sucker.

Personally this will be my last samsung phone (still gonna get their gorgeous tvs tho). Historically I've been less than impressed with samsung phones (this is my 3rd one) mostly due to poor call quality/reception. Add that to the fact that I've had different issues with almost every update, from horrid gps to my phone showing up as a cd drive to now bad battery life.

I know I can just change the ROM, and I have (running SC atm, thanks adren!), but to me its a matter of principle. I shouldn't HAVE to mod my phone to fix problems or to get the most out of my phone.

With that said, I've enjoyed getting my android feet wet with this phone, in large part thanks to the fine folks here at AC.

Manufacturer isn't key when I make my decisions. I've had phones made by Apple (iPhone, obviously), LG, Blackberry, and Samsung.. I just go with whatever phone catches my eye when I'm ready to buy one. This time around it was the Fascinate. Next time, who knows.. Most likely will be something running Android though... definitely my favorite OS so far

The window for selling units w/ a froyo update has closed. Lets be honest, that is what the goal is. With competition geting ready to update to GB, its just too late. A GB update however, would move the fascinate to the top of the list for vzw 3G devices until the dual core 3G phones come out later in the year. If they are interested in moving the inventory this is the only way, and they have to realize this. Just my opinion and prediction.

I tend to agree with this prediction. I suspect that Verizon is skipping Froyo and looking toward Gingerbread as the next update. The reception of a Froyo update is just not attractive enough to gin up enough enthusiasm for extending Fascinate sales, IMO...
