Won't buy future Galaxy S because Fascinate doesn't have Froyo?

It won't necessarily stop me from getting another Samsung, b/c for me the hardware has been pretty flawless, certainly since the GPS fix (though it blew up my ability to connect to my Mac, although I can work around it). It will make me wary about purchasing an Android phone without the latest version (assuming that is important to me at the time), however, because no matter whose fault this is, clearly updating these phones is a major hassle.

hardware needs software to matter

Samsung did a great job with the hardware but the official OTA 2.2 update delay, intermittent freeze ups across all versions, and the continued inability to use the stereo out jack at the same time as Bluetooth handsfree in a car, shows me their software development is not at all on a par with their hardware development.

I will not buy any Samsung products in the future if there is anything comparable available from another company that has a better track record with software. I will happily trade 10% less hardware for 20% better software. Samsung has taken "vaporware" to a new level with the Fascinate, and with it they've evaporated my trust in their products.

Nope, it's too late. I went to the Verizon shop to buy the Incredible and really liked the Fascinate screen. Got talked into buying that instead. Now, with 60% of Android phones running Froyo, I can't help but wonder about Verizon's commitment to the former top of the line phone. Setting aside the ability to root, I just hate having to look at the stupid bloatware every day. My next phone will be whatever is closest to the pure Google/Android experience that is available, regardless of manufacturer or carrier. Yes, I know. Rooting will help me escape from this mental state, but why must we do this? I guess I've got....issues.

because it looks bad if verizon releases a solid froyo for samsung and it runs smoother than their Droid lines...now that the bolt is out we should see froyo announced soon......im just saying

i am running the froyo leak, and it is smooth as a baby's butt! so i am in no hurry to get the official ota update. like so many have said , these communities have far better support than any manufacture or cellular provider. hardware is the most important thing to consider, and the sammy has superior hardware in my opinion... this super amoled screen is amazing, especially when you have been on a regular lcd for so long... what a difference.

I'm just ready for the source code to be released to see what our friends in the dev community here cook up for us. some custom 2.2 kernel action. word.

I agree that the phone is fine. But due to Samsung's lack of upgrade support, I will NEVER buy another Samsung. Out of frustration, yesterday, I was able to speak an actual higher up at verizon. He has the power to give me a different phone even if im not due for an upgrade. I told him my phone was freezing up and complained about the lack of froyo update. After some discussion he told me that he would authorize trading my fascinate with the HTC thunderbolt if I was willing to wait. He agreed that being that samsung not upgrading their most expensive phone( at the time) was a good reason to be unhappy!
So I gather that Verizon doesn't see an update coming for the phone!!!

it is verizon that is holding up the update.. not just sammy.. But why even bother waiting for big red to push it out? I got tired of waiting a few weeks ago, and took the rooting and ROM plunge. I have to say i will never go back. Yes it voids warranty, but you can always flash back to stock and cover all tracks, and it does not void the insurance so you can always fall back on that. and as far as Hardware is concerned... this phone is very nice. zippy, great screen, good sound, all around decent. But if you get the TB try and enjoy it.

about this phone. It has been a decent phone and a nice upgrade from my OG Droid, but I'm a little bitter that that old device is on 2.2 and even getting some 2.3 love. Is anyone here going to buy another Samsung Galaxy S phone after this one ? I'm definatly not going to due to the lack of updates. Droid Bionic here I come !! Opinions ?

I would not buy it either....froyo is getting old....

Seeing as how all the froyo rumors have died down, maybe gingerbread is not such a farfetched idea. We would suddenly be at the top of the foodchain and would instantly stop all badmouthing, and instantly restore verizon/samsung to superstar status. Pretty good business move.
Would make the tbolt and atrix ppl sad lol

In the sense that it would make people happy, it would be a good buisness move. However, in order to sell more phones (I.E. New ones) it would be at a disadvantage to give "older" models the new OS. I am not saying that the SF is an old model in that it is not even a year old, but in the sense that if your phone is not getting the newest OS, you might buy a new phone... that is the way a buisness would make money.

however with the way you are thinking, yes it would create brand and user loyalty, which would bring you back year after year for more, which in the long run would make them more money.

it is verizon that is holding up the update.. not just sammy..

At this point, it's irrelevant who the cause of the holdup is - at the end of the day, a top-of-the-line phone is now 2 full OS versions behind. I'm sure Verizon is a part of the problem, but on the other hand, Samsung has demonstrated their ineptitude with the GPS problems, the idiotic CD Rom/driver issue, the nonsensical full battery popup, etc. None of that stuff is Verizon's fault. No one can argue that they make great hardware, but their software is, quite frankly, garbage.

Although we did purchase a 2nd Fascinate (refurb, for my wife), the only way I'd consider replacing these with another Samsung is if they released 2.3, in the near future, and it was devoid of pretty much all issues/annoyances.

NO WAY

The fact that Galaxy S supposedly the premier Samsung phone doesn't even have froyo yet frustrates me no end

I will never buy one again

a 600 dollar phone that doesn't upgrade to Froyo while the rest of the world moves on to gingerbread and ice cream sandwich?

I don't think so

some day I would like to learn the real reason fascinate was never upgraded

You do realize that the Fascinate has the official, over-the-air Froyo update right?

This +1

Yay! Looks like you got a Fascinate again.

And yeah, if you haven't realized there's an official update for this phone to 2.2, uh, more than likely you shouldn't care about this stuff in the first place.

Nothing to see here, move along...

;-)

not to mention that Ice cream sandwich hasnt even been officially announced as a name let alone have any phones move to it. I believe you may have been thinking of Honeycomb, which I still don't think is running on any phones...

My next phone will not be a Samsung nor will it be on Verizon.

I don't want to spend a lot of time piddling with/customizing/rooting/etc my phone, I just want to use it. I still don't have 2.2 because my phone won't take the OTA and VZW support always just immediately jumps to a hard reset which I refuse to do. IMO, hard resets are not acceptable. I'm not going to re-setup my phone everytime there's a problem (I already had to once due to some bogus g-mail problem and I was cursing the whole time).
