Your way to update to MD4

I have updated the link to the Kernel in post #2 with a good link. Still waiting for Freeza to update the ROM's themselves.

I'm a little new with all this. I hope I'm not asking a stupid question and if i am i apologize ahead of time lol! I'm not rooted and I've not done anything to my S3. With the steps in 1st post do I download the link right from my S3 or do I need to connect my phone to my laptop and download it from my laptop to my phone? I appreciate any guidance with this!

Another option is if you have an SD card reader on your PC, you can unmount the SD card from your phone (Settings>Storage>scroll down to Unmount SD card) and insert to the adaptor and transfer the file that way, then eject the card (either right clicking on the directory in the explorer window, or left clicking on the icon close to your clock in the lower right hand corner) and reinsert into your phone. Phippsy84's way is easier, but I have noticed that when I need to move large files (for example a ROM like this one) it is often faster to do it this way. Yes, more steps, but still overall faster. If you are unsure/uncomfortable with the steps I provided, follow Phippsy84's method.

The instructions you gave worked perfectly for me. Not rooted.

Thanks

Somehow I didn't realize just how many posts I was going to have to respond to. My respect for Skunk has gone up even more! ;)

Meyer, I agree with seanskiT1....Skunk would be proud. You are doing a wonderful job, and speaking for myself, I will try to back you up as much as I can.

One problem I have run across is I have a "#"symbol in my notifications and it says to "install superuser the su binary is out of date" I hit the install button but it didn't work. Any advice on this?

Depending on the app, there may be an update binaries option somewhere in the settings.

Yes I am rooted. Just like golfdriver said, read and reread the instructions and even print them out to have on hand if you plan on rooting. it isn't as difficult as you may think. The hardest part is taking the first step...

Can I flash the correct kernel right after flashing the ROM from post 2, or should I restart first?

You can do them one right after the other but I wouldn't. Here's why:

I think the issue with the Kernel being wrong was a false alarm. So far, everyone who has answered me says their Kernel is dated 4-15. That's the correct date for the MD4 version. So my suggestions is to flash the Modem and ROM, then reboot and check the date of your Kernel. If it's 4-15, you're good and don't need to do anything else.

Qbking77 has posted a very easy video for manually installing the MD4 update (same exact update as the OTA). Very easy to do, and never had any issues after installing the update. This is for people running stock Touchwiz (he does address those who are rooted in the video).

Here's the link to his site. Just scroll down and click on the Official MD4 update.zip. I've used his site for the JB update and the 4.1.2 update as well.

I am one of the lucky ones who are rooted, have CWM Recovery (6.0.1.2 fyi), stock rom, who can utilize the update zip and flash it without losing root and recovery. Again for FYI: Saved update zip file to external sdcard, rebooted into recovery, flashed the zip, formatted cache and dalvik cache, reboot phone (Ensuring that CWM recovery and root access is retained before reboot - recovery app warns me and asks to fix it before rebooting), and voila! I'm on the new version.

I wonder why Sprint is taking so long to get to 4.2.x at this stage...lame. I really like the lock screen widget feature which I use on my TF101 running EOS4 JB 4.2.2.

Actually I had the problem pop back up and did find that setting in superuser and updated the binary through the app.

So ive been trying for days to get this on my phone. Its bone stock running the mb1. Ive tried the framework idea and nothing. Ive downloaded the file posted from several different sources thru 4g and wifi. Every single time i do it i get verification signature failed. Ive have tried doing it thru my phone and moving to external sd card. Ive tried to rename it to update so its says update .zip. Ive tried a different sd card. Ive tried to download it on my computer then transfer it to my external sd card. Every time i get the signature failed. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Chris, has your phone ever been rooted? When you say downloaded the file, specifically what file did you download? Was it the file linked in post #1 of this thread?

Go to Settings / About device, and tell me what the last three characters of the Build Number and Baseband are.(Make sure they're both MB1)
From that screen, tap on Status. What does it say at the very bottom, for Device status?
Is the update file in the top level of your SD card, or in a folder? If it's in a folder, try putting it at the top level instead.

Downloaded from the post in this thread. Both say mb1 and status us normal. I did not put it in a folder. Just placed on card. Shows up when I go to the stock recovery just starts the process then says whole signature verification failed and signature verification failed. No it's never been rooted.

Well...upside is if you can't get it updated, never been rooted nor tried to flash a custom ROM, you are in business to take it to Sprint and ask WTF? Lol....
