With many thanks to SkunkApe, whose shoes are much larger than mine, I fear....

[note]This will be the way to manually update your phone if you are:

Using a Sprint SPH-L710 Galaxy S3. Do not attempt to install this on any other version or phone.

Rooted or Unrooted - Stock Rom with all needed bloatware and Stock recovery. If you are using Clockwork Mod or TWRP recovery, see post #2. Note: You must be current and have MB1 on your phone before using the update file.
[/note]
Download the following update zip and place it on your external SD card. Go to settings/security and make sure unknown sources is unchecked. This may be unnecessary.

Shut off phone. Press volume up, power and home button at the same time. As soon as you see a flash, let go of the buttons. This will put you in stock recovery. Using the volume bar to select and power button to activate, select update from external storage. Choose the file you previously put there. Push your power button. Your update will begin.

MB1 to MD4 Update Zip

Just out of curiosity and to give input to others, I left my settings/security of unknown sources checked, and everything updated fine.

Actually I had the problem pop back up and did find that setting in superuser and updated the binary through the app.

I had it appear a few times and I went to the Play Store and used the link they post in the app to clear up the issue, it downloaded the recent version and installed it over the existing one.

Hello,

I have a Sprint GS3 Model SPH-L710. It is rooted and I have CWM. Android version is currently 4.1.1, Kervel version 3.0.31-329968 Oct 16 2012, Hardware version L170.14. I am not android/linux saavy so please bear with me.

I only rooted to get tethering. Of course lately I've been getting pestered with "System Update Available" messages. Am I right in assuming that performing the steps in post #2 of this thread will update my software and prevent this nuissance "system update available" from appearing anymore?

Also, is there any reason why I should choose the DeOdex over Odex ROM? I tried researching this but I am still not able to make an educated decision. It seems that Odex is more secure but DeOdex is more customizable? Are there other considerations?

Finally, when I perform "Factory reset" in step 4 of post #2, will CWM still be available to me to flash the firmware and ROM or will I have to reinstall it using Odin?

And one more thing, in what way will MD4 "OTM" make this process easier for rooted phones? I have 3 family member phones I need to do this on, and for the layperson it is a bit time consuming. If the "OTM" will make it easier I will certainly wait.

Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, this will bring you to the latest version and stop all those pesky update alerts. Please do a Nandroid backup before flashing, just in case something goes wrong.

2. I'm not sure there's really much of a difference in security between deodexed vs. odexed. If you don't have any plans to flash custom ROMs or do any theming (changing colors or styles of standard elements like icons, notification bar icons, pull-downs, etc.) I'd stick with Odexed. That's how the factory ROM is built. This article might be useful: From the mail bag: What the heck does deodexed mean? | Android Central

3. That depends, I think, on how you actually rooted. Sprint's ROMs, beginning (I think) with ICS, included two files: (/system/ect/install-recovery.sh & /system/recovery-from-boot.p ) whose sole purpose is to reinstall the stock recovery after a reboot. If your root procedure deleted these files, you'll be fine. If not, it will reboot into the stock recovery. You can manually check and delete these files with a root file editor. But if you've rebooted already, and still have CWM, you should be fine.

BUT, odds are you don't need to factory reset at all. There seem to be quite a few here that didn't and aren't having any issues. What version are you on now (LJ7, MA6 or MB1)?

4. Do you mean OTA? I'm not sure what OTM is. The OTA (over the air) update from Sprint will fail on rooted phones. If you're rooted, and want to upgrade to MD4, I think you only have a couple of choices.

This one
Unroot, let all the OTAs apply, and then reroot.
OTA Rootkeeper, from the playstore. This is supposed to temporarily unroot you device so the OTA's will work, then reroot. I've never used it, so I can't provide any information about it. If you search the forums for "rootkeeper", you might find some info. Here's the app: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ&token=0jwqj5FY..

Thanks for the quick response.

I have done a nandroid backup to my external SD card, which it unfortunately seems to have monopolized almost all the memory on.

I will try to flash the firmware, then the ROM without the factory reset and see what happens. I'm currently waiting for a titanium backup to complete just to be safe but will try it after that.

Yes, I meant OTA, not OTM, sorry. I figured that rooted users don't really have the OTA option. I'll look into rootkeeper if I can't get your method to work for some reason.

I guess I'm on LJ7 (Baseband Version L710VPBLJ7). Is the baseband version what you're talking about when you ask LJ7 vs MD4, etc?

Thats is what he is asking about. That is the baseband/firmware. MD4 is the one just released.

Baseband and Build Number. Usually the same, but they don't have to be if you flashed ROMs or modems separately.

LJ7 is Jelly Bean, as is MD4, so the odds are pretty good that a dirty flash (without a factory reset) will work. If you were still on ICS I would advise against it.

If you notice a few apps acting wonky, try clearing the cache, and maybe data, for those specific apps.

Great thanks, it worked without the factory reset! All apps that I've checked are working fine. Many thanks to you for the help.

Has anyone who has upgraded to MD4 also kept WIFI Tether working, may not be an issue, since still on JB, just wanted to make sure before I take the plunge.

I've had no problems there. Tether worked fine after update for me. Phone as a whole seems a lil faster since update.

Yup, same here. Even in nova launcher I notice it a bit snappier when flipping to pages with a few widgets on them. I haven't been able to see the popup browser. Anyone else notice this? Or am I missing something?

You're doing an awesome job!

Thanks guys. I still don't think I know nearly as much as Skunk, but if nothing else, I have a logical, troubleshooting sort of brain, a reasonably good memory, and know how to use search to good effect. (I've been told I should have been a librarian. :) )

Why use Wi-Fi tether app when we got this now....

?

I like it because you don't need to install an extra app.
