Your way to update to MD4

With many thanks to SkunkApe, whose shoes are much larger than mine, I fear....

[note]This will be the way to manually update your phone if you are:

Using a Sprint SPH-L710 Galaxy S3. Do not attempt to install this on any other version or phone.

Rooted or Unrooted - Stock Rom with all needed bloatware and Stock recovery. If you are using Clockwork Mod or TWRP recovery, see post #2. Note: You must be current and have MB1 on your phone before using the update file.
[/note]
Download the following update zip and place it on your external SD card. Go to settings/security and make sure unknown sources is unchecked. This may be unnecessary.

Shut off phone. Press volume up, power and home button at the same time. As soon as you see a flash, let go of the buttons. This will put you in stock recovery. Using the volume bar to select and power button to activate, select update from external storage. Choose the file you previously put there. Push your power button. Your update will begin.

The process in the first post won't erase anything. But be aware that with any ROM update, including the official Sprint OTA, there is a slight chance things will get messed up during the update process, and a factory reset is sometimes needed to clean things up. It's unlikely, but possible. If you contacts and calendar are synced with Google those will be recovered after a factory reset, and the Play store will remember your app purchases and downloads. But applications settings and game data can't be backed up and restored unless you're rooted.

Do anybody know where I can get a complete changlog

There are some who say clearing data from google services framework, in the application manager, will get it to you faster. Don't know if there's any truth to that or not.

Many are reporting better battery life, but I think it depends on lot on your individual situation and usage pattern. If you have the screen on for 4 hours a day, there's nothing much the ROM can do to help.

I want to say thanks, it works flawlessly. You guys as well as other devs contribute so much knowledge. I really appreciate the help. Now I have premium suite. Again many thanks to you and your associates.

Re: Your way to update to MD4 (need a lil push)

ok...fairly new to rooting my S3, but i consider myself to be tech savvy enough to try this. However I'm a little confused. Do I download ALL three of the zip files? I'm doing a TB of all apps and data right now. So once I place the zip files on my external sd card... says wipe cache wipe dalvik.. pls explain. Then says factory reset... really? I have to factory reset to do this? Then flash firmware..which I'm assuming you mean the zip file(s)..which one? Then flash ROM... a little unsure of the terminology.

I know I know..lots of questions from someone who seems to think she knows what's she doing.. ha! I'm good at wingin' it, but need a little push! Thanks for the assist.

Re: Your way to update to MD4 (need a lil push)

The instructions in this thread won't root your phone. Those in post #2 are for phones that are already rooted and want to update to the latest software version from Sprint. If all you want is the latest software, you can use the instructions in post #1, without needing to root your phone.

If you really want to root, follow the instructions here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...e-updated-how-root-your-sprint-galaxy-s3.html
My suggestion is to read those instructions carefully, then read them again. Then read the entire thread, so you see what confusion others had and mistakes others made. Then go back to the first post and follow the instructions through, step by step. If there's anything you don't understand, ask questions before you begin. Once you go through this, I think you'll have an understanding of what wiping and flashing is all about.

Regarding factory reset: Post #1 instructions in this thread don't require a reset, and you won't lose any data. Rooting does not require a reset, either, and you won't lose any data or settings following the procedure I linked to. If you root, then follow the instructions in post #2, be sure to read the the entire post before starting. As the note says, a factory reset is probably not required. But with any update, whether rooted or not, on rare occasions the phone gets flaky afterwards, and a reset is necessary. Doing the reset first eliminates any risk of that. But I think pretty much everyone who's followed these instructions has done it without a factory reset, and have been fine.

Let me ask you a question: why do you want to root? I'm not trying to discourage you. Rooting this phone is easy enough if you're careful to follow all the instructions. But there is always some risk, and if you don't have a real reason or need for doing so it's probably safer to let things be.

Oh, a couple more things: Don't worry about asking questions. We're here to help and we all started off as noobs. :)

Two: if I misunderstood, and your phone is already rooted, then no, you don't need to download all three files. Download the modem / firmware and one of the other files, either odexed or de-odexed. What's the difference, you ask? From the mail bag: What the heck does deodexed mean? | Android Central

If you are rooted, how did you do that? I would think you would know what wiping cache and dalvik, and flashing, means if you've already rooted. If not, let me know and I'll be happy to try to walk you through it.

BTW, you look an awful lot like a younger edition of my older sister!

My bad...I'm already rooted. Just trying to decipher all the instructions on Post #2

I used OneClickRoot to root the phone. I could use all the help I could get. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with those terms...

As for your sister.. She must be purdee!!! :D

Re: Your way to update to MD4 (need a lil push)

Not really sure WHAT...but I did SOMETHING right...NOT having an ExtSD card I was not sure if I could get the zip to work. I uploaded it to DropBox. Meyerweb said if I downloaded it to the Root file on my IntSD that may work.
Did that. Didnt know what to next. Tried all I could think of. Not having a computer it was not much. Tried deleting/re-downloading zip. 5 times. Try clear cache clear data Ad Nauseam Ad Infinitum for a week...then this morning I ENABLED all the Samsung apps that I had disabled when my SD card (reader??!!??) took its dirt nap...to get some memory...and then I did it again...downloaded zip from DB created a Root folder (since there wasnt one) then rebooted into recovery...hit reboot phone...MD4!!!!!!!...turns out ColorNotes and FriendCaster are supported in multi window...I thank you!!!...HA!!!!!...so BIG UPS to Meyerweb!!!...oh and FYI...NO SD. NO PC. BRAIN INJURY!!! :) YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

Ok...at this point I have the zip files on my sd card. I've done a titanium backup. Can you explain clear cache and dalvik? Then, do I or do I not need to worry about factory reset?
Thanks in advance.

So is this gonna come in the form of an OTA version that I can just download? I'm not rooted or anything, so I just wanna get it officially without "forcing" anything.

LOL. Not as cute as you, I don't think. :)

Can you point me to the OneClickRoot method you used? That will help me figure out exactly what was done before, and what you need to do.

Thanks.

Ignore the above. I just saw your later message.

Yes, if you're on a stock, unrooted phone, you'll get the OTA for this eventually. No way to tell how soon, unfortunately.Could be tomorrow, could be in three weeks.
