using the stock v9 recovery, did you go to update.zip (making sure the update.zip included in the op is in the root of you sd card)

MAKE SURE TO READ THE RED AREA'S IN THAT OP

yes, i have stock v9 recovery with the gingerbread update. i am booted with usb debugging on and i am able to get through step 4 in this thread, but i cannot achieve # when returning to adb shell after running ./rageagainstthecage

for rageagainstthecage to work, you need the update in the OP for that one, not the gingerbread update (after you have gingerbread installed, delete that zip on your sd card so you dont get it mixed up)

i don't know which OP you're referring to. there is no update.zip in this OP and the update.zip in the OP of this thread is the gingerbread update.

when i try to apply the update.zip from that thread, i get

E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip (status 7)
Installation aborted.

i've tried redownloading twice

in the op it says

4) Using the Volume-Up and Volume-Down keys, select the option labeled "apply sdcard:update.zip" and press the Menu key.
THIS STEP IS NOT OPTIONAL!!! This will produce an expected error message and is used to trigger the mounting of the /system partition.

I dont want to sound nasty or mean, but it would be good to read through it a few times

totally missed that. i seen the "not optional" thing, but apparently glanced over that part.
tip for the future, though: when helping someone, instead of saying "read", just tell them what they're missing. it solves lots of confusion
i appreciate the help though and now i'm good to go.

You need to apply the V8->V9 update.zip from within recovery or /system won't be mounted and adb server-side won't be able to start a shell. When you apply the V8->V9 update.zip the error you see is expected.

It is not important whether you have the VC baseband. What is important is you have the V9 recovery.

Ok, other than using KDZ and going back to VD, rooting, installing V9 is there a way to do it from VC baseband and stock GB update? IM not opposed but I am trying to do this as quickly as possible. Its time for bed.

Can you z4root once you know your on v9? Easy method used on v9 when l
I used lego Rom
z4root will not work on ZVH.

You are not reverting to V9. You are only installing the V9 recovery. Even if you did revert to ZV9 Android and use z4root, the root would be wiped out by ZVH update.zip.

If you lost your root and are on ZVC, you can use the ZVD root/gingerbreak instructions to get root back.

Once you have root, you can flash_image the stock V9 recovery.

From there, it is the same as we discussed earlier, run the ZVH update.zip Then use the VC instructions to run rage and root ZVH.
