Galaxy s2 charging problem

Hi:
When I plug in the charger I get the "battery disconnected" warning and it won't charge.
It used to happen only occasionally, and if I shut the phone down, removed the battery, waited a little while, and then replaced it and rebooted, then it was ok. One time in the last few days the "battery disconnected" warning went off by itself and the phone charged normally. Today the warning comes on no matter what I do and I can't charge it. The Battery indicator is now at 2% ("critically low").
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! First thing I'd do is try a new battery.

I bought a Lenmar universal USB battery charger ($14) and this seems to work for now. I went to the Koodo store where I bought it, and for only $48 I can upgrade to the Note II . I'll probably do this , though it offends my green conservation soul
