I have an update notification, but can't update

So I have a 4.3 galaxy s3, and recently it was presented to me by a friend that 4.4 is available. So I was on 4.1 having gotten no notifications from my phone for an update and decided to update last night. I cleared the download bug, but now it says there's a software update but when I try to update it says the device is up to date. Any ideas? I don't remember his mobile provider.

4.4 is not available on any US carrier stock samsung branded device. could be some kind of update to samsung software on the device. but not a rom update.
