Is the list of "running" apps complete?

When I go to settings on my Kindle Fire and view the list of "Running Apps" it appears to only be showing me system apps. When I go to the full list of apps I can select various 3rd party apps and many (but not all) of these apps have the force shutdown button active... this implies that they are running. I force a few to shutdown and the Kindle speeds up. Anyone else notice this? Thanks!
