Why does my screen flickers when I hit the lock button to unlock my Samsung phone?

Hi !

This has been causing me trouble since a few days. Whenever I hit the lock button to unlock my phone, the screen flickers once and then goes off again. This happens as many times I hit the button. After several attempts, the lock screen finally appears and then I could unlock my phone. Why does this happen and how can I fix this problem?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Does this happen in Safe Mode as well?

In case this is a bad sign, make sure you backup or sync all of your important data now, before it's too late.
