Why are duplicate contacts created when pairing an AT&T Samsung phone to a vehicle?

Tried deleting and re-pairing the phone. Occurred in 2 separate vehicles, upon pairing the phone. Also installed the latest software update to the phone. Puzzled, please help.

Are all your contacts Google contacts? If not, they should be. Export your contacts to a file. Delete them all. Import them from the file to your Google account (in Contacts). Now they shouldn't duplicate. If they do, go to Google Contacts and eliminate duplicates.
