Android Messages and iMessage reactions

...Instead of trying to parse those and turn them into reactions, I'd be fine if Google or other app developer just blocked them altogether, just like spam. :)
I think Android should do this. Isn't there more users on Android than Apple?

So as of now, there is basically nothing working between RCS and iMessaging? Is that everyone's understanding?

I earlier had difficulty switching on RCS ("chats", what a stupid name to call it, in my opinion") on my phone (Samsung A21) but it seems I now can. I did some rudimentary testing with one of my kids and I don't think it adds anything for me (on Android11) on my side of the "chat" exchange with an Apple device. I don't even see the ability for me to use any of those "reaction" features on my end.

Right, I have RCS enabled and can "chat" (yeah, agree, lame name) w/other RCS users. TBH, I can see the appeal of the emoji reactions. But you will only see those enabled (by long pressing a msg) if everyone in the chat has RCS enabled.

But when texting iMessage users, it's just SMS.

Globally, yes. In the US, I've seen stats w/iPhone as high as 60%.

Video on the state of mobile messaging...
Seems like a good overview. Almost seems like google either had no clean/clear plan for what they were trying to do, or they were just trying anything for "what's the next new messaging app that will become a hit". At one point, the guys says RCS has a better chance of actually surviving (in comparison to the various failed google attempts of the past) because it is a standard, not a service. However, right now it seems that RCS is not really a standard, but instead just another service, another 3rd party app like iMessage, WhatsApp, etc... Frankly, at this point in time SMS messages ate still free for me, as opposed to data, which is not or for which their is a cap. So, unless RCS truly replaces SMS at a carrier standard level, I am not sure that I will ever look upon it as actually anything that just another app.

I've just started to see the reactions via emoji rather than text.

OK, this feature works on my OnePlus Nord N10 but not on my P6P. I have the latest beta update from 1/26 on both phones.

So this is google now parsing and interpreting for "reaction messages" within all SMS messages received, probably doing that within their SMS app?

I wounder if it could be faked out, by sending just a basic SMS structured a certain was using the word "reacted" and repeating text from an earlier one, etc.

I'm sure there will be "false positives" in some messages, especially until several refinements to the algorithms parsing the conversations. There will be frustrations galore from missed responses but it will get better and better. And of course we can always hope that Apple will build RCS support into iMessage at some point, but I'm not holding my breath for that!

I tried to fake out Google Messages, sending "Liked..." but couldn't do it. There's apparently more in the msg payload that's sent than merely the text content. I did send the same msg to the iPhone multiple times and reacted to one. Android displayed the reaction emoji in a separate msg, apparently unable to detect which msg the reaction was for. Also, image reactions don't appear to work yet. Still getting "Liked an image."

Reacting to unique text msgs does appear to work as expected. I composed multiple consecutive msgs, hitting "send" before the prior one was done sending and reacting to each one. There was a delay with the reactions showing up on Android, but they all eventually appeared on the correct msgs.

It's still not working on my P6P. Would be interested to hear if it's working for any P6 owner.
