1080 Vs 720

The Samsung oled screens do have a higher temperature white. If you argue this, or don't know what I'm talking about, then just keep it to yourself because you will look foolish.

Lcd screens typically have a lower temperature white. The color tint noticed is subjective, but it is commonly aceptable to consider sunlight to be "true" white. Any temp above that will look blue, and any temp below it will look red.

Why don't any review sites, especially the good technically accurate ones, drive the screens full white at full brightness and report the temps?

Anyway, it's subjective of course, but you might consider this a weakness. Then again, you might consider that lcd screens have a weakness in the accuracy of blacks. Which area of weakness bothers you the most?

Personally I'm bothered by dark gray blacks more than I am by a high temp white. But that's just me and I'm not trying to sway anybody else. Just pointing out that neither screen is perfect.

With regard to resolution... Does anybody know if any of these 1080 screens is 1080 progressive? Depending on the source material I'd rather watch a movie in 720p on a native 720p screen than watch 1080 interlaced. Maybe this distinction is silly on such a small screen? I don't know. It's certainly a noticeable difference everywhere else.

The GS3 pentile matrix made it incredibly easy to see pixels at normal usage distance (I owned one before the DNA). I would kind of like to take a look at the GS4 and see if they've made any improvements and hopefully reduced screen burnin issues.

Easy? Nonsense.

Depends on what you're doing, but certainly for video there will be no discernible difference.

no it does not depend on what you're doing. You will not see the difference on tiny screens that small. All 1080p is on smartphone is a marketing gimmick.

For text it may be noticeable. Comparing the the SGS3 to the 4 for this might be useful.

Your crazy. Gs3 has probably the graniest crap screen ever. Are you blind?!

GS3 has the worst smartphone screen I've ever seen. The One screen massively better IMO.

It cracks me up that people make comments like these and even more so that people rush to like and thank them.

Yes the gs3 is not the best display (even when it was released) and yes the one has an amazing display (too small for my personal preference but I love the quality) but come on... The gs3 is far from the "graniest crap screen ever". A little over the top here...

Have to agree. GS3 could have had a better display, sure, but it's not an eye sore like some make it out to be. My GNex could have had a better display, too, but I haven't complained since I got it. There can always be better. I'm sure there can be better than the HTC One's display, as well, and we'll likely see it next year or before. For everything that a product does right, there will always be room for improvement. That's technology.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to you. There's a reason that terms like fanboy or troll are used so often on forums

I know, I'm not surprised but just keeping a sense of humor about it. It says a lot about those people...

You've obviously never used a Pantech Burst or HTC Titan.

On topic, I think it is silly when people say 1080 doesn't make a difference on a smartphone, most usually thinking about times they've read that on a TV, it doesn't make a difference on screens under 50". They then think "Well, 4.7" is less than 50" so I guess 1080 doesn't matter". What people seem to forget is that viewing distance has just as much to do with ability to see pixels as screen size does. While 4.7" may be pushing the does it make a difference or not boundary, on a 5"+ phone, when you are using this thing 12-18" from your face, you will see a difference. The AT&T store I frequent has the Optimus G (720p 4.7") set up right next to the One (1080p 4.7") and I can tell a difference. I think a lot of people who say they don't see a difference don't actually realize what they need to be looking for. This is referenced by the OP saying that his S3 looked grainy but thinking it had to do with Pen-Tile, not resolution. A 1080p pentile will look better than a 720p pentile. I'd even say a 1080p pentile is likely to look smoother (not talking about color at all, just sharpness) than a 720p LCD.

If you can't tell the difference then I'd say the screen would be less of a deciding factor when choosing a device. Some people can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on full blown TVs so noticing it on a 5 inch screen would probably be impossible for those people. That being said I compared my One to my friend's One X and there is an obvious difference to me. Just speaking resolution here. I suppose the same could be said for the color temp. The biggest reason I stayed away from the s3 last year was when I saw one for the first time it looked to me like when someone turns their TV to "vivid" mode. The colors are "bright" yeah, but it looks like an acid trip or something to me. Maybe my eyes are over sensitive to it but at any rate the choice this year was obvious after seeing both screens. Back on point, if you can't tell the difference don't claim there is no difference when others can notice. Some people may actually prefer the vibrant AMOLED and I won't fault them for it but no one should say there isn't a difference between the two technologies.

So yesterday I went into ATT to look at the ONE which is by far the most stunning device I've ever held. What was not so stunning however was the display. Yes it's sharp and so clear but I did not really see a major difference between 1080 vs my GS3 720P display. There was a bit of a difference because it looked really sharp but I believe that's due to it being LCD and not pentile.

Does anyone else really see the difference?

You saw a bit of a difference. There you go.

See my comment above. Viewing distance has as much to do with noticing a difference as screen size. Just like your finger looks bigger when you hold it right in front of your face vs. at arm's length, so a pixel looks bigger at 12" away than at 8' (96") away. So yes, the pixels are smaller than on a TV, but your holding them closer to your face

No, I get that. What I'm saying is there are people who, for whatever reason don't seem to notice even the difference between hd and sd. These are the same people who will see a 4K TV and ask what all the fuss is about. It's not a fault of theirs because eyes on different people are different. Some people are colorblind, some can't see stereoscopic 3D, some can't resolve images past a certain point. Side note, several of my friends have not noticed some severe downgrades they've made in their phone screens but that doesn't mean the difference can't be seen. But my point is this, the 1080 screens on both the s4 and the One are far superior in my eyes to last year's equivalent models with 720 screens. If you happen to be one of those people who can't tell then sure, you may not be wowed. Those of us who can are. That's where all the praise is coming from. There is a marked improvement over last year's screens and that is something I think we all can appreciate.

The screen in the store was set very low when I saw it. There is clearly a difference now that I actually own the device.
