About to take the Froyo plunge...

Well, I'm still being hesitant to do this, hoping that vzw will do the ota update. Last weekend was about to do it but backed out at the last minute because of the clockwork thing and the sd card part. I've been told is ok to skip that part, so if I do skip it what is the latest froyo and what issues/bugs does it have? Thanks

I was hesitant the same as you a couple weeks ago, but I finally decided, SCREW IT I'M READY LET'S DO THIS MOTHERF-well you get the idea.

I did everything described in this thread:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...tom-roms-w-root-clockwork-updated-3-25-a.html

Step-by-step, download-by-download

First I loaded the 2.9 file and all was right. Used it for a little under a week then I loaded 2.9.2 using the same exact steps and... wow.

You'll never regret it.

(of course be sure to back up any important data. i used titanium backup, but i've read there are better (?) ones out there) search around.

But seriously DO IT. You'll love your phone even more (if you don't already)

Did you do the sd card part? Then I also read that some phone companies somehow are keeping track of people who root their phones

If you're referring to step 1, putting that update.zip file on my sd card, then yes I did. :)

and where have you read this keeping track of roots business?

What are your trepidations to doing this procedure? What is it about the SD card part you are questioning?

"Update.zip" is the Clockwork Mod custom Recovery, which is how you flash custom ROMs, kernels, and themes.

And as far as companies being able to "track" people who root... Unless you show someone at your local VZW store that you are rooted, they won't be able to know.

He may be referring to this thread over at XDA with a link in the OP to a story at another site.

Fascinate Rooted users tracked by Verizon? - xda-developers

Sounds kinda conspiracy theory to me. But what do I know?
(And anybody tracking with me knows I don't know much haha :))

The "tracking method" described in the article is pretty lame - You haven't done an OTA update, you must be rooted. Easy answer to shut them up on that one - I like my phone just the way it was when I bought it, so I haven't bothered with any of the updates.

Good answer. And my real life answer is, "I like my phone the way it is now - since I was introduced to you guys" :)

Thanks to all of you for your response, unless I have missed it in the threads I have seen instructions step by step on how to do the superclean but not on how to do the sd card in detail. Its only like download it here and install

Download the file, place on your SD card.

If you want, download straight from your phone's browser. It will go into a the folder: /sdcard/downloads

From there you can use a file explorer to move it out of the /downloads folder to the root of the SD card (/sdcard)

How long would it take the developers to rig a dummy download that would pull the OTA update file and then delete it anyway? It's a method full of holes and good for nothing but pissing off your customers.

Ok so now i have a problem. Froyo worked well for a week or so now my phone shuts down about every 15min and reboots in safe mood more and more often. I have uninstalled any new apps since froyo and re restored my phone to right after froyo. Should i put it back to unrooted stock and see if that helps? I'm getting upset at the stupid thing it has a vibrating frenzy and goes to the purple boot up screen. Thanks

Which version of Froyo did you install? What else did you install on the phone after installing Froyo? You may be having a little trouble with what is known as the sleep of death. Depending on what you are running it may actually be an easy fix.

Froyo not working right.

firm ware 2.2.1 and kernel is 2.6.32.9 and everything new i have uninstalled but i had gochat for facebook, gosmspro, uninstalled titamium backup, so the only thing on there is the mybackup root is still there. i unstalled titanium because it never seemed to work right. please advise.

I understand you are firmware 2.2.1. I need to know which ROM you installled. Superclean? if so which version? 2.9 was known to have a problem with random reboots and sleep of death.
