"Always on Data"

I had it unchecked, then my XM/Sirius app keeps stopping and going and on Touiteur I ran into problems like "No internet connection?" and my timeline wouldn't refresh every 10mins so I had to have it back on and if it does indeed take a little more battery life so be it, it's a smartphone but I know I will stream radio and have my things updated properly when I need it to.

i did not say "logged in". i said "running in the background". in other words - it's OK to always sign out of GTalk and also uncheck "auto sign me in" BUT you will still see GTalk running if you look at "Running Applications" in settings. Gmail uses GTalk as the open line of communication to Google servers. GTalk/Gmail/PUSH is fine as long as you heed my directions. it doesn't need "always enable mobile data" for whatever reason. it also doesn't need you to be logged in to GTalk - but you must let it run in the background if you want PUSH. that's been my experience anyway.

I think the point is that if you have GTalk running, you essentially have always on data, whether it says so or not. There's simply no way to get real-time push unless data is active.

I have always on data, and got 16 hours of battery life yesterday, so I'm not worried about leaving it on.

not necessarily. perhaps Google uses some Gmail protocol where the Google server reaches out and touches or pings the EVO via the GTalk channel alerting of new email? as opposed to an always open, always on channel? this is not my area of expertise, but as long as your solution works for you, God bless.

And how do you think it accesses this supposed "Gtalk" channel without using data? Unless it's doing so through SMS, the data channel has to be open for Gtalk to receive the "ping."

There are only a few ways information can get into your phone: the voice channel (which includes SMS), the 1xRTT radio, the EVDO radio, the 4G radio, WiFi and Bluetooth. For purposes of discussion, I think we can exlude BT, and I acknowledge that if WiFi is on you'll get data regardless of the "always on data" setting.

That leave the voice channel or the phone data channel. I guess it's possible google is using the SMS channel to ping the app, but I doubt it. Sprint would not be happy about that.

If data is off, the phone is simply unaware of any information trying to reach the phone on the data channels. For any non-voice information to reach your phone, data's got to be on. Now it's certainly possible the phone could turn data on every minute, let Gtalk check for input, then turn off again. I don't know, but I think it's unlikely.

You can have GTalk on and Always on Data off, and get push. Or you can have Always on Data on, and GTalk off, and get push. Turn both off, no push. This implies to me that either option turns data on and keeps it on.

Hrm - I was just about to post a thread about this. I have both GTalk running (not signed in) and Always-On Mobile Data and I still have a delay of 3 hours or so. I just don't get it.

Any ideas?

there are some distinctions i've read about before - specifically how IMAP with PUSH works and how it listens and pings and is very energy efficient mode but i'm too tired to try to find it. from what i recall - i think there is a difference between a low power level "listening" mode and a full blown open data connection mode.

are you using the GMail app or the HTC Mail app?

Gekko, I am using the GMail app. I did a power cycle and a few tests and it seems to be working better. Not instant (maybe five minutes to arrive) but way better than three hours. I did kill the GTalk app early this morning so that must have been it. I re-opened it when I read the first of this thread and it now I seem to have better results. Thanks!

yup that was probably it. glad you got it working. FREE PUSH EMAIL IS A BEAUTIFUL THING!

Yep, I turned back "Always on Data" back on and battery life is decreasing rapidly

I did the same a few hours ago and I'm not noticing a negative impact yet.

I did try what this thread suggests before making that change so maybe it has something to do with it:

another battery thing to try - xda-developers

Prior to doing that procedure I was getting close to 50% time without service under battery info even though I had reception the entire time. After doing it, I've been sitting at zero for the past 6 hours.

I gave this a try, anything to improve battery life would help...I had mine at 25% cell standby when i just checked.

If you touch on cell standby it will give you a time without a signal number. That number was usually at around 50% for me, but since I ran that fix it's been zero. This is why I can now leave always on data checked and still get great battery life.

I turned my "always on" setting back on this evening...run it through 24 hours and see if I notice a difference...I flipped it off day after I got the phone after I had a bad first day battery experience (it's been great ever since)

and?????????????????????????????????????????????

Not noticing any horrible battery drain yet...I haven't really been on my phone much after the change to see if it's draining horribly on idle.....

Now I'm pondering a hard reset since people have had such good luck with it.

Alright so here was my first real test this morning. I had it unchecked last night as I was using WiFi. Now this morning, as I went into work, I had the Always on Data checked. Phone was at 95% at 9am. Now let's go four hours later with no use, 1pm and it was at 43%, boy was I mad because the times when I had it unchecked it, it would been somewhere between 88%-84%. Big difference with it unchecked

my phone started turning off and rebooting after I did this. I turned it back on. I also had a failure notice once while trying to log online, even though my mobile data was on. rechecked always on mobile.
