"Always on Data"

What exactly is the always on data connection doing anyway?

With it unchecked, it pretty much shuts off you're 3G connection meaning you wont get any push notifications and will lose connection of any Instant messaging programs including Gtalk (Unless you have WiFi on and near a WiFi connection). Having checked will continue to run you're data with the phone sleeping to be sure everything gets synced.

I stopped getting my push Gmail when I changed the Always on Data, I put it back. I have not noticed a difference.

I turned off always on data on June 4th. I've never turned it back on. I get all push emails..and have never had a problem. I do make sure Gtalk is open because you cant get push notifications without it.

this is totally false.

With "always on" turned off, I still get my Gmail and EAS push emails, but I don't get updates to Weather Bug unless I do it manually. I haven't bothered to see what else might or might not work. I get acceptable battery life with it left on, so I leave it on.

I suppose if I know I'm going to have to go all day (like from dawn to midnight) without access to power, I might turn it off, but I routinely get 13 - 16 hours with it left on.

From what i've read on other threads, turning off always on mobile data will allow the 3g radio to turn off after a timeout period (I think about 20 minutes).

So if you are saying that push mail continues to work with always on mobile data off, try turning the screen off and not touching the phone for about an hour. Go to a PC and send yourself a gmail, and see if you get a push on the phone.

I have tried twice now and both times I lost my Gmail push, as soon as I turned the screen back after few minutes it would send me one. I don't know what I should do. Leave it on or shut it off.

Well here's what I came up with as a solution - Places that I have wifi - use that, and turn off the 3g radio.

1) I've added widgets to my pages for 'mobile' and for 'wifi'.
2) go into spare parts and change the wifi policy to NEVER turn off. This is counterintuitive, but it actually uses far less battery than the 3g radio. Otherwise after about 20 minutes, the 3g radio kicks back in and is chewing on your battery for you..
3) When near wifi, flip 'mobile' off, and flip 'wifi' on.
4) When leaving that wifi, just revert it.

Ok maybe l will try it. I do not have poor battery life with it on. I lose more battery just playing with phone and there really isn't a way around that.

you're 2 weeks late to the party. we've already tested this - and there have been multiple posts and threads on this and we've discussed it ad nauseum. GMAIL PUSH works just fine even after the phone has been asleep for hours and hours even if "always on mobile data" is unchecked. the only thing you need to make sure is to not kill GTalk running in the background. always sign out, but don't kill it. Gmail Push needs Gtalk running.

Why don't you try running Slacker, Pandora with it off. I've missed an E-mail already, My twitter won't update every 10mins, Yes streaming music will cut off after two songs.

yes streaming music appears to be affected. i wouldn't be surprised if twitter auto update would be affected too.

Gmail PUSH is not affected. i get my emails instantly.

personally, i'm ok with the setting. as long as i get my instant push Gmail with the great battery life, i'm happy.

I just shut it off, I did confirm the gtalk service is indeed running. I'll see how it works.

Been running with always on data shut off for two days now with no issues. Unless you consider double the battery life an issue. ;)

Well I do have this thread set to instant email reply through the subscription. And it worked.

This will all be a moot point soon enough- I haven't been able to find this setting in FroYo.

Its been hit or miss with the email push. And it now has locked up on me twice, it hasn't done that until I changed that setting.

Android noob please forgive. If I turn "always on data" off and I do something that requires data will it automatically turn data on for that request? If so than I would be more than ok doing this, because I will still get my email to push, and text messaging shouldn't be affected, correct?

You should be fine.
