Ambient display issue - app icons show as squares

Wondering if anyone else is seeing this issue? On my Pixel 2 XL running Android 8.1, with the Ambient Display activated, most of the app icons do not appear to be working on the ambient display. Instead I get solid little squares in place of the app's icon. The Gmail icon works, the Android Messages icon works, and Tweetcaster's icon works, but none of icons for my other apps will display. It can be annoying to have the ambient display activate and only see three little solid squares under the time and date.
