Anyone get the updated Android Messages App with Web support?

Google needs to create a quick settings tile for Messages on the Web.

So far so good between my phone and PC. The connection has persisted even after closing the tab in Opera and restarting my 2 XL. Tomorrow morning will be the real test, though. I've even caught AOD sleeping once after 7 hours of doing nothing.

I will test this on my V20 tonight

I just checked my S8+ which initally showed messages for web option. Today, I switched to Android Messages and it was off. I turned off auto download MMS and it was back on!

I think this is the answer!
Confirmed. I toggled auto download mms a few times on/off and it appeared on my v20 finally.

EDIT: Meh..seems like everyone else is getting it today. I guess Google "switched" it on. LOL.

Unlike some here, my connection with Android Messages on my Windows 10 computer has been totally solid. I've left it on all day while working without ever dropping. I'm wondering if it could possibly be that I'm on Google Fi. At my home there is no cell tower connection. I rely totally on my WiFi connection for my phone. It works very well and it is an absolutely solid connection. It's one of the many reasons I really like Fi.

Wish they would bring it to the UK. Sounds like an excellent service. I have google wifi mesh network inside my house as my excellent TP-link router only just reaches the 2nd floor of my house and doesn't reach the whole floor. By placing the WiFi boxes carefully I now have WiFi everywhere. Google does do hardware very well in my opinion.

Well, now that I have Web messages, how do I keep it connected to my phone

Yes, I have enabled the "Remember this Computer" option

Seems like after a few mins of no texting, when I try to send a new one, I get the following

Thanks, Rick

I was having the same issue. I went in and set the messages app to not be optimized for battery and that seems to have correct the problem for me.

So, I got the web messaging feature and I enjoy that. I like it much better than the pushbullet method I was using previously. I still don't like all the white in the Android Messages app though, but I could get used to it.

The main thing that's bothering me is how slow Messages feels compared to Textra. Loading the app, and accessing a message thread for the first time is slower on Messages vs textra, but a noticeable margin for me.

Anyone else notice that Messages is slower than Textra on the 2XL? I have my relevant developer options set to .5x for animations, etc. and I'm used to a snappy phone, and Messages is anything but snappy and when you use sms a lot like I do, it makes the whole phone feel slower.

I got this working on my Windows7 computer. However, I can only do sms, can't seem to do mms.
Am I missing something?
On the android msg app I have auto mms download on.

Good question. Both Google and Fi seem inscrutable to me, but I've also not seen any disconnect notifications, and my phone and PC were connected this morning even though the phone was doing its REM sleep thing and the PC had been turned off. (My Messages app is also still on the battery optimization list.)

Now that Messages on the Web is a thing, maybe Google/Fi will phase out whatever reliance on Hangouts they've needed. It's always struck me as odd that Messages is my default SMS app, but virtually every text I get and every request for 2-factor authentication comes in through Hangouts.

I tried it out at work for most of the day yesterday but I've gone back to my combination of Textra and Join. Those two work together perfectly for my needs and I just can't give up the customization options Textra provides.

I've never used anything but Android Messages for texting. Having never used Textra I don't feel a pressing need for customization options. Although I would like to have a dark mode.

That's one of the things I love about Android...choice. Those of us that want to customize, can. Those that don't, don't have to. Yes, dark mode is just one of the reasons I prefer Textra. If Android Messages eventually gets a dark mode to match the web interface I may give it another look, but it also has other characteristics of which I'm not a fan. They're both good apps, though.

Good points. I've stayed with Google's Android Messages because it's written by and supported by Google and it has no ads. And now it has web support. I'll wager dark mode will happen soon. I'm comfortable for now and especially with the new web support I don't feel the need to change.

If you are talking about wanting a dark mode on your computer for the messages, go to the Settings and there is a toggle to enable dark mode.

I just tried this, and it only seemed to delay the disconnection a bit. Also disabled AdBlocker and other privacy add-ons but still getting kicked off. Super frustrating.

Anyone else having this issue? When i try to scan the QR code i dont get anything nothing happens??? Im connected to wifi and im not on the Android P Beta...

Cool! Thanks and because of you I did choose the Dark Mode option for my PC. It would be nice if there were the same Dark Mode option for the Android app.

Which browser are you using? And have you tried disabling any ad blockers?
