I see why GN people are flocking to this forum to try and make trouble. I don't contribute to the GN forum because I have a Razr. So I decided to have a look at some of the topics there:
- Face Unlock + other issues?
- Screen Burn In
- Landscape gaming multi touch issue?
- Gmail signature, better on ipad than Gnex?
- Volume Buttons doing more than they should
- Replaced GNex due to banding, 4.0.2 pre installed?
- Face Unlock with multiple faces
- So I tried to return my Nexus.
- Can't get the battery cover back on!
- Can't get Facebook to sync.
- Anyone else having issues streaming music (stops playing)
- Question about multitouch issue...?
- After rooting, no Music Lockscreen?
- Music Stutter/Lag When Screen is Off
...
Seems to me, the GN is quite buggy to say the least.
Owning both devices, as well as a multitude of others, (and being a developer for our in-house CRM software, as well as our communications support tech) I can share a bit of info regarding both devices (as well a multitude of others). I won't reply to any juvenile insults or flaming, so save yourself the typing of fingers if that is your intention. Most of these responses will be in direct reply to your topics posted here regarding the Nexus, but be aware, we're developing for and support over 30 models of devices currently... so this is hardly a dual sided coin.
Regard Face Unlock issues - Face unlock is a gimmick. Plain and simple. Google has openly stated it's not flawless, and for real security, to use another form of protection. The unlock is defeated with someone with a similar facial structure/appearance, and we've actually been able to go so far as to have a few co-workers modify their own appearance to unlock another's phone. It is flawed the same way that any sort of facial unlock software is. (Many laptop manufacturers have the exact same issues using facial unlock with onboard laptop webcams.
Screen Burn In on AMOLED Screens (not just a Nexus issue) - Screen burn in is prevalent with any type of screen. Anyone that tells you otherwise is either misinformed or a liar. AMOLED devices suffer screen burn in primarily when they're not utilized to their fullest. My original Incredible had this issue from using Waze on extremely long road trips. The difference with AMOLED screens (and Pentile in particular) is they're more resilient due to the way they're designed. There was actually homescreen replacement about a year back that I ran into (perhaps Panda Home?) that would actually offset your homescreen occasionally to help prevent burn in. Additionally, it should be noted that AMOLED devices actually benefit from personalized builds of their applications more than any other device. In the case of an AMOLED based screen, you can save battery (and life) by using true blacks when color is neither desired nor needed. In the case of other (LCD) based screens you have to provide power and illumination, even on black screens. AMOLED do not have that issue. If you do not need color on a pixel, don't illuminate it. There's less power draw this way than, and if application developers would learn this, you'd actually see battery life improvement on all AMOLED devices. (assuming we're talking about a significant number of pixels) Screen burn in is an issue we've seen during development over the last few months on many devices, including the Nexus and the Razr. (The Rezound, actually, suffers more from screen burn in than most devices we've been testing on, primarily due to the fact it is still an LCD based screen)
Gmail signature - Anyone who is claiming this is a hardware/device issue needs to learn a bit about the breakdown between software and hardware.
Landscape multitouch issues - Yes. I can confirm this is an issue with the GSM variant of the Galaxy Nexus. The LTE/CDMA variants that we've tested do not experience this issue. It is worthwhile noting that we have seen a few touch screen problems on ICS with various apps. Our own CRM was having issues with this, and it was rectified within our application software. A simplified explanation is that the interpreter for touch position has changed a bit when using sofware only buttons. I would hardly classify this as an Galaxy Nexus, nor an ICS issue. We saw this issue with a few other devices that also had strange capacitive implemented buttons. (Rezound, again has some quirky issues with this)
Volume Buttons doing more than they should - Don't know what to say about this. I've seen the occasional device in the past that has had something wrong internally that causes this. A Samsung Charge was the most recent example of where I've seen this, and a Droid X2 prior to that one. I can't think of any HTC device in recent memory where I've seen this, but it's a possibility.
Replaced GNex due to banding, 4.0.2 pre installed - By banding here, I assume the poster meant a bad screen (developed banding on the images). As stated before, bad components happen in any electronic or mechanical device. If you've never experienced one, good for you, but trying to pin it on a specific device is futile. As for 4.0.2 being preinstalled, I expect this with electronic devices. When you get a newer build of the same model, you should expect to have the latest software/firmware revision on it.
So I tried to return my Nexus. - Contextual, and could be any reason why it wasn't accepted back. Local store being unreasonable, device being physically damaged, etc..etc.. not enough information to infer anything.
Can't get the battery cover back on! - Problem with user, most likely, though I suppose the user could have broken off the clips on the battery cover. I would hardly call this a 'bug' or defect.. However, I will also note that not every device HAS a battery cover to remove in the first place, so... (Yes, that was a slight Dig at the Razr, because of all the devices we're programming for, it's the one that we can't swap batteries on the fly while developing and testing scenarios.... it *IS* a nuisance when we run a device dry, and then have to stay right next to a power outlet for nearly 2 hours to test something.. if there was any MAJOR complaint I had about the Razr, this would be it)
Can't get Facebook to sync. - Ahhh.. facebook. If there is one thing I hate more than manufacturers who forcibly remove base components that are used by every other manufacturer, it is facebook. ICS has some issues with facebook, yes. However, it's more of a pi**ing match between facebook and Google right now than any manufacturer's issue. Not to be too technical about it, but the way syncing works in ICS has changed... In 4.0.3 there has been some changes to allow a better sync, but until 4.0.3 gets pushed out the the Galaxy Nexus users may run into some problems. Before you yell, 'AHAH!!' and point to this, be aware that HTC Sense's social networking widget is just as ugly, and Motorola's Social Networking application has been a massive thorn in my side for awhile. (not just on the Razr, but every iteration of it contained within Blur). Ever seen a social networking app require a few base changes to code that every other manufacturer includes, and is part of the stock Android framework?
Anyone else having issues streaming music (stops playing) - Any streaming service has issues. If you're in a mixed signal area, where your LTE signal is weak especially, you're going to notice this rather heavily. When a network switches from LTE to 3G, you WILL notice data disconnects. There are also a few issues with the way some radios recognize LTE signal strength, vs CDMA. This is going to be a spot where I rub some Razr users the wrong way. Motorola's CDMA radio implementation is stellar... their LTE implementation is less so. In both the Bionic and the Razr, they are often too quick to jump ship off the LTE network onto 3G. I have a couple of my developers in the Minneapolis/StCloud area who are constantly reporting 4G on their Motorola device just magically disappearing and going to 3G, while at the same time, their MiFi's and other LTE devices still have 1-2 bars. Whether this is a preemptive strike by Motorola to keep their radios from possibly juggling between radios (thus draining the battery) I've not determined yet, but it IS an issue that only Motorola devices are demonstrating. Ironically, Samsung devices seem to be the ones that want to latch onto that signal for the longest period of time, never quite wanting to 'give up the ghost', so to speak. This has caused a data outage once or twice (and I believe this is also directly tied into strange, confirmed, data disappearance bug that the Galaxy Nexus has that can only be fixed by cycling airplane mode)
After rooting, no Music Lockscreen - 2 Users have reported they have no music lockscreen since being given a Galaxy Nexus to test. Both have felt stupid when I've pointed out they will only get the lockscreen when they have music playing and it's locked. That lockscreen doesn't just pop up, there has to be an active media to implement this feature. (Ironically, the same user made the same claim with his Droid X, 3 weeks prior
Music Stutter/Lag When Screen is Off - No idea on this one, just suffice to say we've not seen this issue.
Now, back to the question at hand. The Razr Maxx is an awesome idea for those users that have to have the swappable battery, or an extended life battery.
Is the new maxx for everyone? No. Not everyone needs the extended battery life, and not everyone needs the option to swap a battery. Additionally, there are those that wouldn't find the additional thickness warrants the trade-in.
If Motorola wanted to appease everyone here, they would offer up the new model to existing Razr users for a 'trade in' and 'fee'. (trade in, because they're swapping device for device, and fee added on for the extended battery)
Does it suck they're scavenging from their already deployed userbase? Yes. Will there always be updates? Yes. There's no getting around that. Motorola has stated they're going to try to curb that in 2012 (we'll see if they do), and hopefully they find a happy medium on what to do about it.
Personal Note: The amount of childish bickering going on here is disgusting. The last I checked, these are public forums and the way that many of you have been acting would get you punched in the mouth in a real public location. I've seen Razr and Nexus fans hissing and spitting at each other like you're a bunch of alley-cats trying to mark your territory. (note, if you're offended by this comment, you're probably one of the ones at fault)
You all love your device, and insulting another device doesn't make your device any better than another, it just makes you look like a tool. If you want to REALLY impress people with your device, talk about it's merits without trying to put down another person's. If you aren't contributing in a professional and respectful manner (even if you disagree with someone else) just do the the thread a favor and stop typing... and you absolutely MUST show off YOUR device, do so by showing the world how intelligent the person using it is, and discuss without resulting to name calling, trolling, and insulting someone/something.
