Anyway to separate notification volume from call volume?

First point: PhoneWeaver does allow you to have separate "notification" and "ringer" volumes for the phone. So I have a "night" setting where the phone will ring, but emails are silent. I have a day profile with noisy email notifications and phone ringer. So it elegantly solves the OP's problem. It also has a cool feature of manual profiles with countdown timers. It comes with a preconfiged (and customizable) profile that will mute all sounds for 1m:30m, and then revert.

Sorry Dimsdale... but at least on my Nexus with ICS, PhoneWeaver, while and apparently interesting app, does NOT seemingly satisfy the OP's issue, nor mine. You are correct in that it has an "option" to separate the ringtone and notification settings. But the nature of this thread is that ICS doesn't respect that option. Have you tried this app out on an ICS device yourself?

I have just invested forty minutes trying, without success to make PhoneWeaver work on my ICS device.

I would welcome a step by step instruction set from any user WITH and ICS device who HAS made this work. I will gladly say "I was wrong"... with regard to the current version of ICS and PhoneWeaver.

My quest continues... I will have to look at RingLeader now.

Thanks dimsdale for the pointer to what looks like a cool app... however it doesn't seem to address the ICS specific issue at hand.

It doesn't work on my Nexus either.

I really need the ability to shut up the notifications at night. Why wouldn't you want this ability?

This thread has kind of fallen off, and I wanted to bump it with some new information (I don't think it's posted in the thread).

there is a google support issue about this, I encourage everyone to go post in it.
Can you Separate notification and ringer volume in ICS (Android 4.x) - Google Mobile Help

And there is a google code entry for it, I encourage everyone to star it.

It's been several days now and this is still driving me nuts. Sure, I have light flow to silence during sleep hours, but this is just a band aid. And doesn't help if i need to mute them at other times. Light flow isnt really designed for profiles like that, and other apps, while supporting profiles better, dont have as much control over sounds as light flow.

Anyway, I digress, just separate notifications already so we can be happy.

sorry if this is off-topic, but related basic issue with notifications in the gmail app
'm not getting this, migrating from a Blackberry where every alert could be customized on a micro level incl. e-mail..

I don't want a sound for every single e-mail I get into my inbox, just a visual notification, so I put alert ring on "silent"

But I do want a ring for certain contacts hi priority contacts.

So I put a "star" label on these contacts,
Went into the label notifications setting and selected a ring tone and level for "star" label
Nothing happens.

Does chosing silent at mailbox level mean that everything else is silent? How do I get the phone to sound only for a few select contacts?? I can't find doc. on this

Thank you

you should be able to do this with labels. Starring a contact will not start messages. If you create a label and set up rules for certain contacts to be assigned that label you can then setup sync and notifications on that label through the Gmail app.

thank you zarkuu.

I've been trying every permutation and combination of settings between my "inbox" and :"labels"
It seems that if notification is silent on inbox, it doesnt turn the labels I give another tone "on"...i realize that unlike BB, "important" is who the Google engine thinks is important, not you assign it to. etc. Can seem to get some contacts to ring, and default not to ring....

I'm pretty flustered and giving up for now. Not a lot on the web on how to do this....

thanks again.

follow up...i kinda got it using my gmail desktop, creating a label and putting a *filter* on,.....
now everything w/the label/filter gets the ring tone alert I assigned to those msgs.

tx again

Quick work around:
1. copy your preferred notification sound file from your phone to your computer.
2. open it in a audio editor of your choice, I used Free Audio Editor - Completely free audio editor for Windows, and select amplify, pull down quarter volume preset and apply to file, safe to your computer and rename.
3. copy the file to your phone and select it as your default notification sound. (you nay have to reboot)

I'm curious if anyone has any new information about this. Does anyone know if 4.0.3 fixes this? Or do any of the custom roms fix it? This is still a very annoying problem a month later.

If you go to tools and restore settings (I know 3 clicks) you can make your own, recipe settings for night, day meeting, etc (you have to set them up first).

Hey I want repeat notifications and b&w flip phones have those.

App looks promising but for $3 I need a way to test it or...something.

Looks good though, can't wait ;-)

Someone posted a work around, maybe even in this thread which helped me.

Assign a unique ringtone to each alert type and boost the volume using a sound editor. Save to the phone and assign it. A bit of a pain, but if you always want certain alerts to be louder, it works.

AOKP Milestone 3 was released last night, and includes the ability to separate volumes.

Just tested out an app for a fellow called Simple Sound Profile Widget. Works with the Gnex and has 4 different sound profiles: Normal, Meeting, Silent, and Home. It's free, and pretty simple to set up. You can have your ringer set for one volume, and your notifications set for another (or vibrate). The only thing I noticed was that if the phone was set on vibrate, and I had the Notifications turned up, I woudn't get any notifications sounds. It wasn't until I turned up the "Media" sound setting, that I started hearing my notifications.

Either way, it seems to work fine, and might be useful to some of you.

The rom Milestone 3 has notification and ringer volume separated. This rom can be found at rootzwiki.

Thanks for the info! I'll be trying it out as soon as I get time. I'm tired of waiting for the official update anyway.
