Ask us about the Sprint Evo 4G

Do you know how the LED notification light works? I'm looking for a good Android device with a true multicolor LED that will blink different colors for different notifications and that will continue to blink until I've actually checked the message. I can see the LED by the speaker in the pictures, but it looks like it may function similarly to the HTC Hero which only flashed green for notifications, and which would only flash for 5 minutes.

Any word on how this LED works?

I seen on some website (can't really remember) that best buy mobile is goin to start giving out paper work to the sales people and doing presales next month, and that the phone will most likely come out sometime between the end of May to the end of June. I would just like to know if there is any way of finding out if this has any truth to it or not.

Sorry we took so long to get some of your questions answered. Got stuck in Houston on the way back from CTIA, and tried to have a semi-normal weekend with the family. :p

Anyhoo, here you go. It's a good start.

I have a question; if I don't live in a 4G area, will my experience with the device be hindered. I mean, I live in a suburb of Chicago, just outside the 4G coverage area, but I work smack dab in the middle of it so I would imagine I would be ok... mostly. Now think of those of use on Sprint that live in a state with no 4G, what about them... would there experience be lessened by this.

I ask because I noticed one of the elements spoken about during CTIA, was how 4G would make uploading those pictures and videos taken by the 8mp camera easier to do. Any thoughts to this?

I'm w/'DonnieAles'.
I am very excited for this phone but am concerned about battery life, and for good reason.
When I purchased the Palm Pre? last year at it's release, I had been watching it since Feb. Reading everything I could, asking questions, reading, reading, learning, etc. (i even had my hands on it 2 weeks prior to release) BUT battery life, seemed to "slip the list" as I, now looking back, just took it for granted. BIG MISTAKE.
My Co-Worker has a MotoDroid and is very satisfied with it's battery life. And yes I am aware that the EVO 4G has a slightly larger battery, but when you take into account all the additional features of this new device I kind of begin to cringe.
EXAMPLES of what concerns me...
- Sense UI
- WiMAX Radio
- 1GHz Snapdragon Processor (almost double the Droid?)
- The larger LEDLCD Screen (curious as to why no AMOLED)
- Does a higher quality Camera(8mp) need more Power?
- Front-Facing Camera (1.3mp)
- HDMI(mini) out
- MiFi Capabilities (WiFi Hotspot)

All these things are exactly what is going to make this phone/MID amazing! BUT IS the battery going to "Hang"? I know that the Specs on the EVO 4G are slightly more campaerable to the Nexus One?, so maybe that would be a better example.

May I add... Sprint GPS, I use it all the time on my Pre... If it's in the car while I have the charger connected its no real issue.... just gets really warm, hot even. Use this off the charger and boom done in like an hour, maybe.

I'm like you, I waited and read and read and learned and am now disappointed too. But I don't see the EVO to be an issue in this regard!

You should be able to do whatever you could on 4G on wifi. However, some things are optimized for 4G. For instance, the youtube menu is different in 3G vs wifi/4G cause it gets optimized in a HD form. Also, I don't think it will allow you to upload video on 3G.

1. Sprint GPS is nice, Google Maps Navigation is 10x better and neither cause as much of a battery issue as I had on my Pre. These phone sip energy compared to a Pre under load. Trust me, I last all day on a 1500mAh battery on my Hero, when I got 5 hours on my Pre.
2. Having either program on on my Hero and on the car charger still charges the battery. Not the case on the Pre, the battery still drains.
3. My phone doesn't get hot from Nav, it gets hot through wifi tether though, but only if you leave it on for a while. I've never gotten the warning (LED flashes green and orange) which indicate the phone is getting too hot, but its nice that the phone will warn you. I suspect processing power had a lot to do with this problem though.

That would make sense. I've got the wifi down and 4g at work.... The only time I could see this being an issue is when your out and a bout doing what ever your consider "life." thanks for the reply.

I think I heard about the led notifications in a video. I believe it's on the left side of the ear piece. Not sure. But I think it does

How about the SAR rating? What is likely to be and where does it fit in with comparison to other phones?

Ok, long time reader, just (FINALLY)joined! Any how does the evo do 4g tethering too? I haven't seen an answer to this yet.

You mean like wifi or through a cable? I believe its wifi, but it is its own app that you will be able to adjust security settings.
If you are asking if it will do 4G tethering, I believe the answer to that is yes.

4G Coverage

any one know the coverage area (miles?) of a 4G city?

I live outside of Boston and i'm looking forward to dumping my Pre!

Sprint has a coverage map on their site. Go put in your address and see where you fall at, and remember to go the data part and select the 4g part.

From what I have read it will support up to 8 devices via wifi.

I'm thinking Sprint will make this a free service considering that Verizon just eliminated the fee for Mobile Hot Spot on the WebOS devices.

Sprint is really stepping it up. Good to see things starting to turn around for them finially.

that's good advice, but since Boston doesn't even show it has 4G (blue on the map), that's not going to work for him right now.

I'm down on the Cape and, although I don't expect that Boston's 4G will stretch all the way down to me, I'm anxious to see just how far over the bridge I'll have to go to get it.

RoadKill - thanks for the info, I'll have to check back with the Sprint site, as cooper says, Boston isn't Blue yet!

Coopere1010- Hope you get some 4G on the Cape!!

I imagine this thing has led notifications. Any word on how many colors? I have to say, that is 1 feature I envy from my sisters mytouch3g. My hero has Orange and green, but she also has blue, res, magenta... each notification can have its own color.
