Attempting root tomorrow

Alright, congrats on getting the Rom working.

And Chris is right the Voodoo lagfix can be more hazardous than good. So i'd just leave your phone the way it is now, maybe get JT's stable non-Voodoo kernel from ROM Manager at the most! Quadrant Standard scores will be low until we get 2.2 and the JIT compiler, unless your on a Voodoo kernel. But there are more important things than 1700-2000 QS scores. Having a clean, stable, fast phone that has better battery life is much more important to have than benchmark results imo.

And as far as theme's you can install any of those later, either using ROM Manager or by downloading the .zip and putting it on your SD card and flashing it via CWM Recovery.

ummm one more question...actually 2.

I tried using a different theme from JT business romq manager and it didn't work. how do I instal a new theme? does installing a new theme reset my settings?

secondly, I understand not to do the voodoo kernal, but what are the benefits and negatives of doing the non voodoo one as mentioned? how do I instal that kernel?

thanks again everyone for your help!

As far as theme's i'd stay away from those until you get a lil more familiar with CWM Recovery and ROM Manager, as most of the theme's have to install though those.

And the non-Voodoo kernel from jt1134 is in ROM Manager in the same place the Rom was. Just install the (Stable) one, and it should download and reboot as soon as it's done. And DON'T wipe data/cache if you do it, you wont have too.

I've never done it, but you should just download the theme in Rom Manager and then it should reboot your phone into recovery and install it. If it doesn't automatically install it, in Rom Manager, click "Install ROM from SD card", find the theme file you downloaded, it'll be a zip file stored somewhere in Clockworkmod>downloads on your SD card.

Benefits of replacing your kernel? I honestly can't come up with a single one. I tried out both JT's and the Stupid Fast ones, and I honestly could not tell a difference performance wise. I actually got far worse battery life on the Stupid Fast kernel... go figure, I thought part of it's purpose was to improve battery life. So, I'm back to the stock kernel and the phone is running perfectly.

Negatives? There's probably more chance for sporadic problems - force closes, my aforementioned battery life problems, some people report sound popping/skipping.

I know you're reading all kinds of reports about how fast these kernels make people's phones, but I honestly think it's a placebo effect. They may do something, but I doubt anyone could record a video conclusively demonstrating a measurable improvement.

The only differences i can tell with a different kernel are, I see better signal strength in certain areas (could be the area i live in), I have noticed better battery life too, but i think it's more the deodexed/debloated Rom more than anything. And i have my brightness at 25% and my screen timeout set to 2 min., so that might have something to do with my battery life as well.

But i can probably go 2 days on a full battery, i just choose not to. When i put my phone on the charger at night when i go to bed i'm usually still above 50%. And i use my phone i'd say a good amount throughout the day. I listen to music on it for a good 4 hours, facebook updates every 15 min., i send an avg of 50-75 text's, and i check forums using tapatalk when i'm mobile every 45 min to an hour. So i think it depends more on how you use your phone than anything.

ok thanks alot... yeah i was just curious to the kernal cuz i keep hearing good things but your right.. it could be placebo.

After you put the .zip on your sd card, go into CWM Recovery and go to "install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard" then just scroll down until you find the .zip your looking for. Select it and scroll to yes, after that go back and reboot system now.

so i go to the xda site using my phone and click the zip link on my phone and save to sd card that tway

I haven't tried it that way. What i do is i plug my phone into my laptop with USB, mount my sd card. Download the .zip from xda or where ever, copy it to my sd card, eject (just because i can). Unplug my phone from my comp, reboot into CWM Recovery and install it that way.

I've gotten used to it because i've installed about all of Dirrk's D02 Voodoo kernel's and a few of JT's and you have to install those the same way. But i wouldn't mess with any Voodoo kernel's yet, i would wait until after we get Froyo and see if the Developer's can make them more stable. If your going to mess with your kernel (which i don't recommend, unless you know what your doing), i would either use JT's stable non-Voodoo or Geeknik's StupidFast v1.0.36 stable non-Voodoo. But again, if your really new to things, which it seems you are, i wouldn't go flashing kernel's just yet. :)

another question.. iv done all you said.. i selected the file from the sd card... and you said to click yes... well my options are meta-inf/ and system/

hmmm i've never gotten that before, after i click yes it usually installs the package and then takes me back to the screen where i have to go back and then select reboot system now.

But to me it would seem like /system but i'm not 100% on that. So if anyone else has seen that before, input would be greatly appreciated.

i was never asked to click yes. what was i supposed to carry over to my sdcard? i carried over the entire folder.. and on my sd card it says DarkGlossMod.

when i click on that, it gives me those two folder options.
