I am getting more and more anxious as my palm pre falls apart. I lost my volume buttons yesterday and the screen issues are getting to be more common then not. How is the keyboard on the epic keith?

Basically if this phone does OTA, can use a Bluetooth keyboard and the built in qwerty is good it will be the perfect phone.

what is worrying me is all the talk about the screen resolution in super amoled. the pentile matrix uses a line of small pixels and another of bigger ones resulting of reduced sharpness of the display. i dont remember what the actual number is but over at xda a member posted the actual resolution displayed due to this, and this as a result occurs the jagged text.

does anyone have any considerable time comparing lcd wvga to super amoled (so called wvga) ? and can confirm the difference of sharpness? or can i rest assured that its just my imagination?

90% of sharpness related talk is barely noticeable to the casual eye, if at all. The retina display isn't super special until you really look. With AMOLED screens, you get used to the hyper-contrast.

It's the same with Pentile Matrix on the Epic. If you really want to look close, or run an experiment using green colors, you might notice. The bigger deal is the Super AMOLED that allows you to see outside. *That* was an easily identifiable issue with AMOLED and it got reduced to the point of usability.

I didnt notice much of a difference in readability on the galaxy phones and my HVGA screen in the pre. I did notice the MUCH brighter, higher resolution, and over all better looking AMOLED screen compared to it. But nothing negative.

you do know that wvga is supposed to be much sharper than hvga rite? (480 x 800 vs 320 x 640)

saying that there is barely difference just confirmed my worries... thanx for the tip.
i understand the color is much much better, but i guess everything has their tradeoff

Reread my post

Well the difference is only space IMHO. I have done so many side by sides with my HVGA pre and my brother and mothers EVOs that it really comes down to just a ton of extra space to work with. As for quality there may be some sharpness or color differences, but that could be lighting and LCD manufactures that were used in each phone rather then the different specs.

I know everyone has a 'person at Sprint' they've spoken to. I'll just add the latest speculation. Spoke with a regional Sprint coordinator (not a store employee or manager) and they said 'possibly Aug 11th. Just what I've heard but I'm not certain.'

I'm beginning to think next week may be it. Not because of that one comment, but from how everything but the actual date announcement has been happening like it's launching any day now.

Announce it tomorrow/Thurs morning. Boxes, product, and displays start arriving Monday. On sale middle of the week. Certainly seems possible.

I hope youre right. But honestly at this point I dont see it happening anytime soon, heck I dont think august is even the month this phone will be released. But Ill take a surprise release, would make me VERY happy.

sphinxx, August 20th is the day that Samsung TV is supposed to reveal the phone. If the other times they've done that (Samsung TV announcements) are worth looking at, the phone will come out almost day-and-date with that show.

I just called my local Sprint. They still don't know about a launch date and speculated it should be this month. I asked if they had a signup list yet, and he said he was just about to create one. So he agreed to put me on the list as the first guy, guaranteeing me a phone when it gets released. Here's to hoping...

Sprint website states:Instant rebates on phones from the website through 8/14. Epic 4g pre-orders 8/15?

not to burst your bubble, but the advocate devices haven't even arrived in stores yet, and the advocate phones usually arrive a couple of weeks before the release date. so, the 11th seems like a stretch. Also, Sprint has never been one to officially announce a phone's launch date so close to that actual date.

at this point, i don't even think the Samsung TV date of 8-20 (which is where most of the speculation came from) means much. It could have been pulled b/c they realized they made a booboo but it could've also been pulled b/c Sprint changed the launch date.

I do think they will announce this Thursday, since the Sprint Playbook (which normally contains launch info) has been pushed back until that morning instead of the usual Wednesday night.

If they don't announce by then, and if the advocate phones don't arrive by the end of this week, I think you'll be looking at later than 8-20.

Just my opinion.

I'm hoping for a preempt to try to launch before Droid 2. Droid 2 will have BOATLOADS more advertising- but the Epic is a better device and it has the 4G's and the Wifi's. :-)

Seriously, though- to have Droid 2 launch a week or 2 prior to Epic will only keep Epic in Droid 2's shadow to the general consumer.

Evo and Droid X may be comparable- but the Evo's earlier launch and the whole 4G marketing campaign and cheaper rates I think helped sell EVOs a lot- shame Sprint/HTC can't keep up with demand.

It will be a serious drop-of-the-ball for Sprint to let the Droid 2 launch without the Epic as an alternative.
The Droid 2 just doesn't seem like much of an upgrade to me, regardless, but most buyers aren't very well informed.

So Keith you say its light and this worries me a bit. Im not directly rough on my phones, but being as though I rely on my phone for everything and in the process of business and personal use it does take a beating. How do you think the phone will stand up to constant use and abuse.

Sad but true. Just slapping a different looking case on it and a letter 2 after is enough for most people to take a look.

It's light for a slider smartphone. To put it in perspective, it felt as heavy as my Pre, maybe a tad more. But, it seems lighter because of the size and you just expect it to be heavier. It's def a "pretty" phone, not built for being the whipping boy. Plastic isn't cheap feeling but it's still plastic, so I would expect scuffs if you tend to be rough.

Im not worried about scuffs or looks. Im just worried about things working. Im not looking for years of service, rather just 1 year. In your opinion(not going to come back a few months from now and hassle you if youre wrong :p) how well will it hold up to 24/7 use and abuse. It will be in an office and personal use environment. Basically as long as its built better then the pre Ill be happier.
