Bingo! I finally figured out how to get things straight in my Droid X 2.2 update

yes, i do have mybackup pro also, but i have had issues resoring in the past with it.

and i do also have appbrain, but it seems that also gave me issues like not syncing all my apps or showing ones i have deleted in the past. probably just settings that i never corrcted.

I have use MyBackup without issues but I have learned it is wise not to restore:

1. Contacts - Allow Google to restore them.
2. System Setting - It restores settings of apps that you may not have installed that causes issues.

Also if you are using EStrong File Explorer, you can click menu/manage/App Manager and you can hold on a file and select Select All and then click menu and Backup and all apk files will be stored on sd card under Backup folder annd then you can restore apps by simply clicking on apk files and install. Keep in mind if app is a pay one you still have to go to Market and download app to make it a full version app again and you can receive updates.

Did the reset and so far everything seems smooth, even with all my apps installed again. Wasn't so slow before, but there is an improvement. Thanx, everyone. Really appreciate it.

Here's a question, does the Google account save phone settings as well or just Contacts/Calendar data?

Here's a question: once my phone is formatted, wiped, and then set back up...is it safe to sign back into Backup Assistant, or will that just put 2.1 stuff back on?

AppBrain is your friend ;) Take a look in the Market.

Just to be clear, I already have an Appbrain account. When I do this and then reinstall everything from Appbrain, my apps are going to be like brand new, correct? That means I will lose all my saved places and progress in my games?

Also, what does it mean to "unmount" the SD card? Does that mean physically removing it from the DX or "unmount" it by a setting in the software like you have to do in Windows before you can physically remove it? Can I just stick the SD card in my USB stick and view it in Windows and format the whole card there?

To unmount it means to have the OS not utilize it anymore to put it bluntly. Yes the card will physically still be in the phone, but you will be telling it to not use the card for anything unless you "mount" the SD card, or tell it to use it again. Kind of like mounting and unmounting a USB device from your computer.

You need to unmount the SD card in order to format. Also to your second point, refer to the OP above:

"you actually have to quickly ENABLE or check off "back up my data" so you can uncheck automatic restore. Once automatic restore is uncheck, then uncheck back up my data again. Now you can log into your google account and you are finally fresh.
"

I guess the key word is QUICKLY.

Or Airplane mode.....

Or Airplane mode.....

How about bypassing the activation? I read somewhere that on the opening screen where you "touch the android", there's a sequence to bypass that and go straight into the OS. I imagine you can do that and just *228 while in the OS to reactivate it on the network.

I'd like to thank you truly.

I was enjoying my froyo on my dx, no bugs whatsoever...but this thread got me curious.

I didn't wanna lose my setup by factory resetting, but I figured what the hell.

WOW, that's all I have to say. What a difference! everything I'd soooo much quicker its crazy. I never realized it until I did the reset with your method.

Ok....so I have to spend 20 minutes getting my stuff back in order...WELL worth it!

Thanks a lot. So just to be clear, I need to actually "format" the SD card through windows and erase everything on it like it's a brand new card, correct?

You can do that or format it on the phone by unmounting it first then you'll have the option to format it. I preferably would erase everything on there manually through Windows then use the phone's OS to format it. That way the phone formats it exactly how it wants it, but formatting it through Windows won't hurt either.

Thanks again. I noticed right after I did a factory reset and went into my phone, it was telling me I had version 2.2. How did it get it? Is it still on there from when I previously downloaded it? Because my phone updated after the factory reset way too quickly to download froyo again.

After some feedback and some thought I did a slew of factory resets. The thing I kept missing was what order to do what in.

Every time before a reset I would go into privacy--> and uncheck backup my data as well as uncheck factory restore. The problem is, even after a factory reset by default automatic restore is check and all apps downloaded will still start pushing down.

Most of us just automatically log into our gmail accounts. The only way to get a truly clean reset is to NOT log into your google account after a factory reset. Just skip it. When the next screen shows up with choices of accounts to choose from asking you if you're done adding accounts... still, skip it - tap done adding accounts. Once you're fully booted, go to privacy--> you actually have to ENABLE or check off "back up my data" so you can uncheck "automatic restore". Once "automatic restore" is unchecked, then uncheck "back up my data again". Now you can log into your google account and you are finally fresh.

*(you may see a screen again with a check box asking if you would like google to back up your data - uncheck this)
As per usual, please backup any important info such as your pictures and format your SD card right before you do your factory reset.

[Edit]
** Caution** I've found the current version (0.7.9.0) of Launcher Pro to cause issues. I would discourage using it (as much as I like it) until a future update.

Easier way; just before you singing into google account, tap menu => disable restore. Done.

hey guys, i have important stuff on my sd card, so my question is, in order for this whole thing to work, do i have to format my SD card? Since froyo my gallery has been kind of sluggish, thats my only problem so far. is anyone elses scrolling while in view all pictures kinda sluggish? Is this normal?

Did you previously download 2.2? Resetting your phone doesn't erase the OS, just clears all the info off the device back to the way it was from the factory, in this case, back to stock 2.2. So yes 2.2 will be on the device if you downloaded it. If you didn't download it and it says 2.2... you must have a live Android or something lol.

Back up everything onto your computer then format it. It's best to format the SD card, that way all of the settings that 2.1 had saved won't be present when you reset the device back to stock, fresh start. When you've completed the reset, then restore your important stuff back, like pics or videos or whatever. Others have said their photo gallery is kinda buggy, mine is ok I guess.

Ugh. I don't know what I did, but I installed Appbrain as the first app on my phone. Then I opened it on my phone and did a sync, thinking it would look up my appbrain account and download all my apps. Well maybe I did it the wrong way, because it didn't download anything, and now my appbrain.com account is only showing the 7 apps that are on my phone! How do I get back the 40-50 apps I already had and purchased?

I'm a little confused. Where exactly do you go in and uncheck the Restore thing? Or if I do a factory wipe before upgrading, will that eliminate the problem?

The most annoying part is that it sounds like the only way to make Froyo work is to wipe out everything, do a 100% fresh install, and then set everything back up again. What a PITA. What's one reason I went to a Mac from Windows -- I got tired of having to do that every 3 mos because of Windows' instabilities.

Besides, my stupid phone won't even SEE the damn update. I keep doing Check for Updates, and it either sits on "Checking..." forever, or says it's not available.

Thanks.

Rob

I'm planning to do this in a little while when I get home, but I'm a noob, so I want to make sure I'm doing this right. I haven't seen any full step-by-step instructions, which I would prefer to have, so I'm posting my steps here to make sure I'm going to do it right. I have my contacts and calendar synced with my gmail account.

These are the steps I plan to follow:
1. write down all my "downloaded" apps (not that many, and only 2 paid), and make note of my layout/widgets etc.
2. copy sd card contents to pc
3. unmount and format sd card
4. follow first post, clear the backup and restore flags, and do the factory reset.
5. pray.
***not sure from here ***
6. activate phone using *228, option 1 ?
7. Add my google account to bring back my calendar/contacts
8. start adding back apps

Anything else?

No, your apps and settings are stored on Google servers, they will push back after a while.
Now, remeber that screen where you have to put in your google user name and password? When you are at that screen, just press Menu button (the first left one of four, on the bottom of your phone), then select "disable..."

You might need to check you Wi-Fi or data connections
Thanks.

Hope that would help.....
