Bingo! I finally figured out how to get things straight in my Droid X 2.2 update

Hi, er...question?

I'd like to turn off the Privacy settings before upgrading to 2.2. But, in my privacy settings, all they list are the Use My Location and Factory Data Reset options.

Back Up My Data and System Restore are non-existant. Is this just a 2.2 thing? O__o I feel a little confused not seeing a Backup and Restore section in Privacy. (Which is due to the Backup Assistant that exists in 2.1?)

(And pardon my newbieness on this.. =__= I could easily just do the 2.2 update and then, see if my phone has any "problems", but I'm thinking of doing all this ahead of time.)

I would imagine they would be in the Factory Data Reset options. I dunno where else they would be in 2.1.

"No, your apps and settings are stored on Google servers, they will push back after a while."

Google will automatically add my apps and settings back to my phone? So I don't need to download everything again? How long does this usually take (I did a wipe about an hour ago).

Heh the whole point of this thread is KEEPING that from happening...

That's the thing though. The FDR is the only option under Personal data. And above it is Use My Location. Those are the only two options in Privacy that I have. Oh well.. (Maybe, it'll change if I d/l 2.2...)

Thanks for the reply though. ^^;

*goes off to d/l everything from SD to an external HD and reformat card before 2.2 update*

After I have done all this, can I then re-enable the setting to backup apps and data, or does this have to stay unchecked permanently?

What's the difference between a "wipe" (as in BlackBerry initialization) vs. a Factory Reset for the X?

If there is a difference, how does one do a wipe on the X?

They're the same thing. Both involve erasing all user data and resetting the phone back to factory standards. They're just called different things.

There are many different questions here and I'm glad many were answered. If anyone thinks there should be more clarity in the first post, let me know.

Sorry about that Fabrian. I wanted to know if my backup pro saving SMS,mms, and then restoring those would mess things up. If you don't use my backup, I understand, just looking for an experts opinion. Also curious about the formatting of the SD card. I have movies and pics and music that I would like to save on there as well as backed up settings for adw and LP+ and handcent. Do you think keeping these things by moving them off and back would cause problems? Thanks for your time and effort on this. This is my third DX and don't want to keep going around and around with vzw. Big ups on the fix. Must have taken some serious time to figure out.

Wow, just finished this process and it definitely feels a bit smoother and snappier than before. Its not perfect like a powerful phone should be, but it's much better than 2.1 was. Kudos to you Fabrian for figuring this out!

I did a reset this weekend and turned of backup my data but can't remember what I did about restore. I was only having minor issues with 2.2 but today I tried making a call and while it said connected, I couldn't hear a thing. My mom was a little irritated after I did that a couple times. any thoughts before I go through the OP's process? Oh and I did a second reset today and now I can make calls again. Only thing loaded back was ESPN FF. Go Pack Go!

Quick question: after the factory reset is done, and everything has been set up, is it safe to turn on backup my data and automatic restore, or do these options have to be turned off forever? Thanks.

That same calling bug happened to me today! Only way to fix it was a reboot. Idk if this restore process would fix it. I don't want to go through the hassle of losing all my apps data etc and not be sure if it's fixed.

This happened to me this evening, the second time since upgrading to 2.2. I made a thread about it on androidforums.com, buy haven't gotten any responses. I'll be making a post about it on the motorola forums shortly if one doesn't exist, and try to get us a little attention. In the mean time, I want you guys to try something. In call settings, uncheck the box next to voice privacy. See if the audio bug of occurrs again.
