Bingo! I finally figured out how to get things straight in my Droid X 2.2 update

Quick question: after the factory reset is done, and everything has been set up, is it safe to turn on backup my data and automatic restore, or do these options have to be turned off forever? Thanks.

I would think so, but I'm not taking any chances. Honestly, I don't need google backing up anything for me except contacts and calendar.

Sorry about that Fabrian. I wanted to know if my backup pro saving SMS,mms, and then restoring those would mess things up. If you don't use my backup, I understand, just looking for an experts opinion. Also curious about the formatting of the SD card. I have movies and pics and music that I would like to save on there as well as backed up settings for adw and LP+ and handcent. Do you think keeping these things by moving them off and back would cause problems? Thanks for your time and effort on this. This is my third DX and don't want to keep going around and around with vzw. Big ups on the fix. Must have taken some serious time to figure out.

I think you are fine with restoring sms/mms, but I'm only taking a guess there. I would copy your pictures, music and videos to your pc/mac (you should anyway) and let everything else go... reconfigure your launchers fresh.

That same calling bug happened to me today! Only way to fix it was a reboot. Idk if this restore process would fix it. I don't want to go through the hassle of losing all my apps data etc and not be sure if it's fixed.

No idea what that's about, I haven't run into that problem yet... you know it'll probably happen now..lol

I did a reset this weekend and turned of backup my data but can't remember what I did about restore. I was only having minor issues with 2.2 but today I tried making a call and while it said connected, I couldn't hear a thing. My mom was a little irritated after I did that a couple times. any thoughts before I go through the OP's process? Oh and I did a second reset today and now I can make calls again. Only thing loaded back was ESPN FF. Go Pack Go!

If you don't remember what you did about restore, I'd tend to think you didn't uncheck it - and this is really the key for the whole process.

Easier way; just before you singing into google account, tap menu => disable restore. Done.

I haven't tried that, and I'm not doing any more damn resets unless I have to. afaik, if the long way works, then I'm sticking with it ;)

My biggest problem is how the GOOGLE SEARCH works...when using using google search (with ALL selected, as opposed to web, contacts, apps, etc) only one contact willl show up even if there are multliple contacts with a common name (ie DAVID). Furthermore, once selecting the found contact..instead of going to the contact's information, the CONTACTS: ALL list opens and then you still have to pull down to the contact you are looking for,

Does Fabian's fix address this?

As far as Launcher Pro.. I don't know. All I do know is that every time I put it in after this "fix", no matter how long I was good and stable I'd become unstable after installing LP.

I've installed every single ( 30+ ) app I had before the 2.2 update minus LP and all is well. I have had ZERO problems since.

Launcher Pro does not seem to be availabe from the Marketplace as of this post. Maybe an update is coming. Also, you metion Google Search version. How do you determine which version is installed.

Launcher Pro & 2.2

Hey Fabrian,

I heard when you install Launcher Pro you should first remove all widgets from the X screens. Since launcher pro installs an "overlay" you could be running multiple widgets underneath which would affect performance. My first install of Launcher Pro I failed to remove the widgets and the performance was terrible, including lock-ups.

So, is it weird that when I did this the Flash and possibly the Kindle app automatically installed themselves, i.e. I didn't have to do anything? I know this because when I went to the market it prompted me to install the manual updates for those two apps (as if they were already installed), rather than listing them as "purchased".

Not sure what's going on there, because this did not happen with any other apps and I followed Fabrian's directions exactly.

I just d/led Launcher Pro this morning from the market. When you search for it, it is not coming up as the top result...you have to scroll down a bit.

I just did the steps listed, and now re adding all accounts/apps/widgets.

Should the auto restore/data back up be unchecked for all eternity or just for the reset?

Edit: I started to download all the apps from the market, and eventually the free apps disappeared! I recommend writing them all down. Missing my folder app that organized games/tools/etc which I don't remember by name. :(

Ok this is odd. I went into appbrain, found the app and added it to my list. Launched appbrain on my Droid X and found it. I still could not find in marketplace. I was able to install if I went through AppBrain. I am hoping some competing Android App markets will kick Google into getting some of these oddities worked out.

Anyone know where does back up/restore save the information at (Google?), and if it can be cleared so we won't have to uncheck auto-restore??
