Didn't this issue come up with HTC and the Tbolt?
Sent from my Droid X using Tapatalk

Yes it did. Supposedly HTC was ready to go and didn't want anymore delays so Verizon told them they would release the device if HTC in turn promised to deliver an OTA shortly after release. (what those dates were I have no clue)

I'm not trying to get anyone's hopes up, but I talked to my buddy who is a store manager at a VZW store in Wisconsin and he is still looking at 8/4 as the store release...He also said, if there was a big change, its completely possible that he wouldn't hear about it because corporate has been extremely tight lipped compared to other phones.

He said it was weird because typically flagship type phones come out with loads of fanfare and he has a solid date a month in advance. I'm not sure if I'm more worried or excited...

Kellex usually has good info, but I've seen him get burned before...

All I know is if the Bionic doesn't come out before I head back to college, I won't be getting it and I feel safe assuming that a lot of other college-aged folk are in the same boat. Probably going to have to settle for the Droid 3 or the Charge if that is the case.

So who gives the okay to start the advertising? If moto thinks it is ready do they have to get verizon's okay?
I would imagine that each company throws the switch on their own advertizing. In the case of the ThunderBolt, most of Verizon's advertizing centered around their 4G LTE network, and there now being a phone that was powerful enough to handle their network, while HTC's advertizing included brief images of the ThunderBolt but was more about their YOU philosphy, etc. I think Verizon scaled back their intended advertizing push when the ThunderBolt was delayed and Skype video chat was pulled. At some point they started the 'coming soon' advertizing and then it disappeared even from YouTube. It was a bit of a missed opportunity.

Im in the same boat. If it isnt out by the time I head back to school most likely I will wait until I come home for christmas to buy a new phone.

Bionic release in September, and then the new iPhone and new Nexus (which is possibly on Verizon) launch right after that? Way to screw the pooch, Moto.

Sanja must be hitting the bong a little to hard if he thinks its a good idea to wait and release it in september.

What I don't get is how the Photon was announced after the Bionic yet is releasing before it. Makes no sense to me.

Anymore everything moto does doesn't make sense lol. I dont understand how you can announce a phone months in advance and then other phones get announced a few weeks before and they are out before it. Now I know the bionic had problems but still either release the phone or scrap it completely. It is going to hurt them more the longer they wait than if they released it early and it had a few bugs(which after multiple revisions and 6 month delay I would hope they had the issues worked out).

Moto didn't have to deal with Verizon in that case. We all know how extensive they are with their testing.

yet their updates and phones still seem to have more issues than other carriers even with all this testing. It doesnt make sense. I dont understand how dev's who have full time jobs and have a quarter of the time these companies who pay people to fix bugs take so long to fix. They should hire these devs to get the kinks worked out they do a better job anyway.

I agree, and it scares me to contemplate the quality of a phone released without all of this testing. >.<

But what testing are they really doing if the phone still launches with a slew of bugs? To me extensive should result in a phone that doesn't need an ota update as soon as the phone is released or a few days after.

That's why I'm surprised there are so many people in this thread who are willing to buy a Bionic on day one. Granted, they can always return it and pay the restocking fee but why go through all the hassle when it's so much easier to wait a couple of weeks and read reports from real users.

Concerning Motorola's ability to release updates, Motorola released Gingerbread for the Droid X eight weeks ago and they still don't have it fixed. There's a thread on Motorola's forum listing all the issues with Gingerbread and some loyal customers are ready to jump ship due to Motorola's slow response to address and fix problems. Here's a link to the thread - the list of issues is in the second post - click here

Hopefully Motorola's still on track for a 07/28 launch - time will tell.....

Yeah but moto put development on hold to work on the droid 3 and bionic. Supposedly the droid 2 gb update was coming soon they were just waiting until the droid 3 was released. We can only wait and see if the 28th is still on track.

The Bionic announced at CES WAS scrapped (codename Etna). Since VZW is the one that licenses the Droid brand they are probably the ones that decided to shift the name to another device that Moto had in the pipeline (codename Targa) scheduled for a late q3 release.

This is concerning for sure. But I think that it goes back to people trust their own hands on use rather than other people's reports.

Did you not read my post because I clearly said I knew it was scrapped(the original bionic) But the targa was slated to have different internals and what not so that phone could still be in the pipes since originally the targa was slated for q4 as quad core.

I understand your point but if people weren't willing to hang it out and buy the phone on day one then it would be pretty difficult to get 'real reports from real users'

Makes perfect sense when you realize that you're talking about two different phones. The first Bionic was a failed device and was canceled. To save face Moto made up the story that they were just making improvements to the original Bionic but it's really a whole new phone with the same name.

Thanks, Robrecht
