Blackberry Storm to Thunderbolt... who else?

You can add another Storm user to the group. I'm probably a rarity because I actually liked my storm and had very few problems with it. I just got my TB in the mail but haven't had the time to activate it. Hate I will have to learn a whole new phone all over again since I'm so use to using my storm.

It would seem I too, am in a minority. My Storm 1 served me well for two and a half years. Except for memory leaks (and battery pulls) it was a great phone to use for work.

The TB is much better for surfing the net, and is able to store more apps - but having said that, I really don't use many apps. I'm not into games and have yet to find good replacements of the apps I used most on my BB for the TB: calendar, text, contacts, email.

The TB is a great gadget, but I am hoping to go back to BB at some point if they come out with a new Storm/Touch with a bigger screen, QNX/4G in the next couple years.

There are lot of text and contacts and also calendar apps that blow the Storm out of the water. I also came from a Storm 1 which was bought day 1. The market is your friend. I was a die hard BB person and I still like them a lot but I don't see anything worth my money in the pipeline for BB.:)

I agree on the BB pipeline - maybe the second generation QNX "Storm" will be good.

I have been to the market and I have yet to see any calendar app that blow BB out of the water. We may just differ on taste here, but I am a retired graphic designer (30+ years) and what I have seen on the market are horribly laid out, bad color schemes, and confusing to view.

I would have hoped for more with the huge screen they have to use.

Another S2 user here. It has been a bit of a trial particularly with the OTA updates that wipe out all apps. The last time, a few months ago, I vowed never again with BB. The night clock still doesn't work?Sure, there is a fix but I'm done with it.

Got a Xoom when it first can out and it synched right up with my stuff. Wife has a DX and that has been a positive experience. Bought the TB yesterday and it synched with everything from the Xoom including compatible apps if I want. It's very responsive and so far I'm impressed with all things Google and slowly warming to the cloud. Much better screen. Have downloaded LTE ONOFF app and will use the TB routinely in 3G. Hopefully that will make the battery life acceptable. I expect to use the 4G with the WiFi hotspot capability occasionally in my business.

My only worry is the battery life. The S2 wasn't great?what smartphone is?but it got me through the day. At least all the chargers I have are compatible. The charger that comes with the TB is small so that will go travelling. Life is an adventure.

Yep. Bought the Storm 1 expecting it to be the iPhone killer. Held on to the peice of crap waiting for the Storm 2 to be the iPhone killer. Another peice of crap. Fool me once... fool me twice... hello Thunderbolt!

BB has some very nice integration. But... it's so far behind in terms of technology it can't compete any more, except for those users who need a 'kind of' smartphone. (there's still a strong market for people who don't want to 'understand' their expensive devices) Which I think the iPhone and the BB phones sit in well - while the Thunderbolt is a true smartphone. I'd rather work a little to understand how to use my 10 speed bike than to settle for a 5 speed bike.

The loser RIM execs love skipping today and talking about their 'Superphone' for tomorrow. What a laugh! They've promised and not delivered so much they, have no right to continue promising... it's time for them to shut their yaps and actually deliver. particulary because I and many others are no longer listening.

Used an nv3 for a few years and when that bricked about 5 months ago I picked up my brothers old storm 1. I needed off that thing immediately. Couldn't use the keyboard, voice quality was beyond horrid.

Love this thing. It will definitely get me through another 23 happy months.

recently switched from a Storm2 to the TB....i miss my battery life :(.....but thats it. The phone is great, when its not dead...LOL

i used the storm1. it was a mostly reliable phone, far less problems with it then my original pearl that i had before it. i actually dropped my storm in a bucket of water and it still held out another 3 weeks until my new-every-two came up. loving my TB now though :-)

I will give BB another look when they come out with their 2nd gen QNX smart phone - but that may not be for another 4-6 years.....by then I may be retired for a second time and not need a smart phone, or computer - it may all be built into a tablet.

Don't hold your breath look at the Playbook, its there flagship QNX system and its not all that impressive specs are like high end for system released like 6mo to a year ago. Don't think RIM needs to be high end tech though there niche is business and there business apps and services are top notch. Coming from a Storm 1 the one thing that I cant get use to (not a deal breaker at all though) is the sometimie "push" email, though it could be HTC's email junk thats messing me up.

Coming from storm1 I had high hopes. It seems thunderbolt was a great name seeming its following the storms footsteps as a problematic headache. Had phone less than 14 days and already getting reboot issue and 4g doesn't work had to force 3g just to use data. So they came up with a great name for it just not for the reasons they wanted .

Coming from a Storm 1 my high hopes were all fulfilled. I have 4G, GPS locks on very fast, no rebooting problem, and my 2750 mah battery keeps me connected all day and then some. i still think hte name is kind of silly and someone asked me what I had for phones named after weather? i didn't think about it until he asked.

:-))

I've had both, the Storm 1 and 2, and being completely honest, I didn't have a problem with neither. They were far from perfect, and certainly never lived up to the "iPhone Killer" expectations, but I can't say that they didn't suit my needs. I operated both the stock software and even built a few of my own...and again, until the last couple of "outdated BB OS" months, I didn't experience any of the reboots, nor any other problems that most experienced. The only problem was, RIM/ VERIZON just stopped updating the phone, keeping it uncompetitive in the smartphone arena. The last straw was when, instead of releasing a new Storm or even updating the current OS, they (RIM) released a flip phone. YES...ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 90's, where FLIP PHONES are the new craze (sarcasm included).
Now...once I left, and played with an HTC Incredible for a couple of weeks, I knew that I had been deprived for quite some time, and I was just salivating for the Thunderbolt to drop. So far (knocking on wood), I haven't experienced any of the rebooting problems others seem to be having, my extended battery gets me through the day, and my 4G is on point (I'm working off of my HotSpot as I type) and other than just familiarizing myself with the Android software, I am in heart with this phone.

I will say this though about the BB Storm 2.
Hoping that I'll never have to use it, It will make one helluva backup phone.

Wow...this pretty much sums up my road to the Thunderbolt, as well as my emotions throughout, perfectly.

...and certainly never lived up to the "iPhone Killer" expectations...

Funny to mention that, because it certainly seems that way, but think back to when the BB Storm 1 dropped back in Nov '08...

The iPhone 3G had just been released a few months prior. The thing is, while everyone was "OOO-ing and AAHHH-ing" the new iPhone, I for one, wasn't impressed at all. Still no video camera, no multi-tasking, email support that was pale in comparison (and this is a HUGE priority for me), and requirement to activate via iTunes (among a long list). I had a chance to play around with one that my friend owned, and while I was very impressed with the browser and the whole "app experience", I knew that it just wasn't for me. When the BB Storm came out, I was definitely ready to jump on that ship. I had already been using (and administrating) BlackBerries since 2004, so I was very comfortable with the OS -- it truly was exactly what I was looking for.

Add the customizable profiles and all of the other traditional BB features, and was DEFINITELY the right phone for me at the time. No regrets at all on that purchase.

When I got the Storm2 in Dec of '09, my sister had just purchased the Droid Eris. Once again, I was impressed with what I saw, even more so than with the iPhone. The quick browser, google maps, app support, widgets, etc. I was very impressed. At the same time, it just seemed to "buggy" and "raw" at that time. Android wasn't quite ready for me yet, and I decided to go Storm2 instead of getting a Droid...but in the back of mind, I was fully aware that when my next upgrade came around, I would probably be considering Android quite heavily.

Fast forward again to Dec 2010... I've had my Storm2 for a year (which is when I start to get the itch), there is absolutely ZERO in the rumor dept regarding Storm2, or any full touch screen device on VZW...or any enticing keyboard BB for that matter. Device OS development had gone completely stale...OS 6 was an improvement, but seemed to be at least year behind when it finally arrived. I told myself I'd wait a few months and see what new device would pop up once 4G LTE got rolling...and much to my surprise (sarcasm), there were absolutely ZERO blackberries in the early 4G pipeline. No new Storm series until at least next fall...if at all.

Yup, the decision was easy. I could not be happier with the Thunderbolt, and there's a very good chance I would have chosen it over a 4G Storm 3 anyway even if one were available...but the decision was easy because BlackBerry decided to not even show up to the fight.

Just to update: I've had my TB--updated from an S2--for about 1.5 months now. Used it traveling and on vacation. I use it locked to 3G only most of the time using the "LTE OnOff" app. GPS, Wifi and Synch always on. Bluetooth on only in the car. Screen brightness on auto. Sometime I have used the WiFi hotspot on LTE. I have had zero of the problems reported by others on other threads. The battery life is equal or better than my S2. The Thunderbolts functionality, performance and the availability of apps are better than the S2 ever was in every way.

Had an original Storm and Storm 2. While they both worked fine, they just didn't have the up-to-date features I wanted. Unlocked my Storm 2 before I switched to the ThunderBolt. Now my Storm 2 serves as a backup and as a temporary phone when I travel to GSM areas. Glad I made the move yo Android.

i went from storm 2 to thunderbolt and i will never look back im rooted stock and loving every minute of it. battery life is about 10-12 hours or more depending on usage Blackberry was a joke and awful in every way since the negatives out weighed any upside to anything on the phone. I have had absolutely no problems with this phone once rooted. pre-root battery was just plain awful and was thinking about returning it but after a lot of reading and learning im loving life with my new phone. easy choice imo.
