I couldn't find the answer so I'm asking. We have a family share plan with 5 lines, 2 have unlimited data. The family members with the 2 unlimited data plans are looking to break off unto their own accounts. Example:

Verizon Family Share account A:
555-1212 (main account)
555-1213
555-1214 (unlimited data)
555-1215 (unlimited data)
555-1216

Would become:

Verizon Family Share account A:
555-1212 (main account)
555-1213
555-1216

Independent Verizon account B:
555-1214 (unlimited data)

Independent Verizon account C:
555-1215 (unlimited data)

I thought you could. It was my understanding as long as you kept the same phone # on Verizon, the features would carry over. Then someone argued it couldn't (specifically with the unlimited data plans) because they would be seen as new accounts and features can't carry over from old to new. Any one know or have experience with this? Thanks.

I work for VZW, and I deal with this every day. You need to do whats called an Assumption of Liability and release the lines from your account and have the other people assume liability. All of the features carry over, including contract dates and upgrade dates, they will only need to pick a new talk and text plan.

Here is the number you will need to do it: 1-888-832-4540
Just ask them for yourself.

We had to do something similar when my mom's second husband passed away. His son (who was the executor of his estate) told VZW he was dead and send him a final bill. Problem was mom's phone was on the same bill. So he had to go back to VZW with her, reactivate his father's plan, release her line, etc. She got his plan and her old number.

She later lost her phone, and someone started texting with it and calling (not overseas, than goodness) so we killed that phone. We wound up porting her to Jitterbug/Great Call since they are on VZW's backbone, and she didn't need text or data.

Great, thanks for the info.

I wanted to follow up. We were able to "re-arrange" everything using the method pingplayer01 described. No issues.

The weird thing is, called the regular customer service line.... they said it was not possible because it would be considered a new account (even with the same VZW phone #).

Thanks again.

You're welcome. Customer service can be pretty stupid sometimes that's why I gave you the direct number. I'm glad you were able to work it out.

Thanks pingplayer01, I had been wondering about this myself. Graduating from college in a couple months, not planning on going off the family plan anytime soon as it's only $30 a month for me total, but always wondered if it would be possible to keep unlimited data if I wanted to break off from my parents. Honestly from verizon's perspective they should strongly desire such breaks anyway, as those new individual lines will almost definitely give verizon more revenue at minimal to no cost increase.

Wonder what those same reps would say if I told them that just yesterday I ported a line in and in the process had to take someone off a legacy Alltel plan when I put her on a current vzw shared minute plan with the new line and voila old line got to keep its unlimited data
(New line did have to go tiered though but we expected that he got in on the double LTE data plan though so it wasn't so bad ).

Some reps are so stupid :(
