Connecting Chromecast to an A/V receiver

You can't. DVI doesn't carry audio. You may need to fined some sort of adapter that can extract the audio stream and make it analog to send that to reciever or tv.

Found this. Think it should work.

Amazon.com : Etekcity? 4 x 1 HDMI Switcher Selector with audio output: This switch supports 720/1080p and 3D, along with stereo, toslink, COAX, LPCM, and DTS digital audio. Great for Xbox 360, PS3, Cable boxes, and any other HDMI device. Also this in

That looks like a great option. If you want 5.1 audio try to find out if it works with Dolby Digital Plus or you have a possibility of being stuck with stereo only.

Finally got it to work.
Step 1. Power down System ( Unplug Everything)
Step 2. Check connections. Move the CC to Video 1 input on my VSX-40
Step 3. Powered everything back up , except the CC
Step 4. Plugged in the CC, .
Step 5. It works! sent Google Play music Checked good. Netflix I have video and sound, Youtube works great

First off nice AVR.

Have you tried the CC in other hdmi ports. Could the dvd HDMI setup be looking for audio on a spdif port? Can you force direct audio decoding or Dolby Digital Plus.

- Connected Chromecast device to A/V via 'dvd' HDMI Port, (the only avail port).

- So far with youtube videos I'm able to get audio through the two front channels, no center channel, no rear channels, no sub.

- Also of note Volume Controls do not respond via the A/V on the Harmony Remote.

- Unkown (at this point) how it's supposed to be set up correctly for 5.1 or to use via Harmony remote, juggling a handful of remotes is a joke.

I've never had any issues with my home set up prior and use a harmony remote.

(TV) Panasonic TH-50PZ80U

(A/V) Sony STR-KS2300

(Media) Sony BDP-S350

(Remote) Harmony 550

All of the above purchased fall 2008.

EDIT: Found the answer to 5.1 dynamics as well as the Harmony 550 remote.

Tab Projection vs. Direct Playback

Tab Projection with the Google Cast extension allows you to mirror the contents of your Chrome Browser while Direct Playback, the Cast button in apps and on web players, sends the video directly from the internet to your TV, without first passing through your device.

When both options are available, choosing direct playback will increase the quality of your video.

Tab Projection is limited to 720p and stereo sound
Direct Playback supports 1080p and 5.1 audio
Supported sites like YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, and Google Music will perform best using direct playback.

For more information about Tab Projection or Direct Playback, please visit our Chromecast Help Center here.

I have a Pioneer VSX 822 and I have no problems with using Chromecast. I had been using the receiver as a video switcher anyway and the Chromecase just fit into the last remaining port. I turned down the volume on my TV (LG) so i know that the sound is not coming from there. I am not an audiophile, but it definitely appears to me that I am getting 5.1 sound through my speakers. I have an activity set up on my Harmony Link to set things up correctly.

Really not sure what you are trying to do 541rrhse. It sounds like your questions really are about the harmony remote and nothing to do with chromecast.

I did look up your A/V device and it appears it is a integrated all in one unit. I didn't see anything in the setup for it that suggests it will work with the DD+ Stream the Chromecast puts out. Please keep us informned if you get 5.1 working. I suspect you will be limited to PCM encoded stereo because your AV can't decode Dolby Digital +, or atleast I couldn't find anything to suggest it.

I think you're correct, so far this is all I've experienced.

I'm going the wireless route with bluetooth edifier spinaker speakers that i use from my iPad. I have a view sonic PJD5134 projector with HDMI that i've plugged my chromecast in to steam netflix etc from my iPad. All of that works great. What isn't working is the sound part. I can't stop the sound from playing through the small internal projector speakers rather than through the bluetooth ones. The audio setting for the projector are very limited and don't mention anything about audio source. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

I think the first thing to clarify is you aren't streaming from the ipad. The chrome cast talk directly to Netflix. All the ipad does is tell the chromecast what content to play.

How do you expect these bluetooth speakers to work. When I looked at the projector it only had a 3.5mm jack for audio out. Are the bluetooth speakers paired to your ipad. If that is the case, it doesn't work that way. Get some speakers and attach then to the 3.5mm audio out port.

Just looked up your speakers. Get the 3.5mm aux cable and connect it to your projectors audio out port.

Thanks Craig. My thinking was around the iPad talking to netflix not chromecast so that makes sense what you're saying. I've wired the speakers in to the PJ and it works now. Still disappointed that my master wireless plan didn't work.

I think they do make Bluetooth Transmitters that will do what you want. It is just another thing to get though.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you do not plug chromecast's power supply into your poineer receiver's USB port. I almost broke my receiver. My receiver states 5mA max on the USB port. Chromecast draws a little more than that. It worked fine at first. Then my stereo froze and didn't work for a day. It's not worth experimenting further.
Hey Benny out of curiosity what happens if you plug the USB into the Pioneers port? Assuming it has one for audio play. Any chance it plays audio through It? As if it was a plain USB stick with MP3's on it for example.

I guess it needs the Hdmi to control the playback still? Just wondering if audio can go through USB on it.

Thanks

I have my Chromecast hooked up to my Yamaha RX-V671 and I can play audio just fine with the TV off. If I start with the TV on, play music and then shut the TV off, the music drops off for about a second but comes back, everything else seems to work fine at this point.

I have a Yamaha V473. Have the Chromecast currently plugged into my tv but noticed no audio from the AV Receiver. Is it simply a matter of plugging it into an HDMI Port on the receiver? Would you mind telling me step by step what you did?

Bob

Bob,

You have two options. Your AVR supports ARC(Audio Return Channel) so you could use that, or plug the CC Directly into the AVR.

If you use the ARC connection review your manual for your AVR. You will need to select the correct source to use the TV audio.

You can also plug the CC directly into the AVR, that will work around the need for ARC to get the audio directly to the AVR. CEC will also then allow the CC to change the source automatically on the AVR when you start to use the CC. Personally I like having it in my AVR, but that can depend a bit on how your HDMI ports are available.

When you guys say that you have the CC plugged into your AV/R are you using a HDMI "In" port and then matching it with a corresponding HDMI "Out" port? I'd like to cast from the CC thru the AVR so that i can use the AVRs audio settings instead of the HDTVs. I have a Yamaha RX-V367 connected to a Vizio 47' HDTV. TIA

i just looked up the AVR. A few things. First it doesn't support DD+ so just don't be surprised by that. Second, you generally don't have a input and output for each port. The AVR will have a one output, and then however many inputs to let you select from. Generally speaking allot of AVR's won't change between connection types though. So HDMI needs to stay HDMI, component to component, composite to composite.

You should be able to plog your CC into any HDMI port on the AVR and get PCM stereo audio to the AVR. If you want Video just make sure the HDMI output is plugged into one of the sources on your TV.

It should be noted that since you can't get DD+ you may get similar results if you plug the CC into your TV and then use whatever stereo out from the TV back to the AVR. The biggest advantages of plugging into the AVR are: 1. If the AVR can decode DD+ for true discrete surround sound. 2. You are low on HDMI ports on the TV and have a reason to need it for something else.

I have the CC connected to the only open port I had on my A/V which was 'DVD'. The other ports on my A/V have a Cable Box and Blu-Ray player connected.

There is typically a row of labeled HDMI ports that are for connecting your inputs such as Cable Box, Blu-Ray Player, XBox, etc. Then there is a separate HDMI port to connect the A/V to your TV.

Thanks guys. I hooked the CCt up to a HDMI port this morning and the audio (5 channel stereo) and picture (1080) were fine but the i had some playback issues with netflix buffering.
