Type this (ls /system/etc/) in the list that prints out does it say "install-recovery.sh or install-recovery.sh.bak?

When I try to get to recovery mode I turn my phone on when holding down home and vol down but after the lg splash I let them go and the screen just lights up black. -lg optimus s

it says ...... "install-recovery.sh and where do you want me to put.....(ls /system/etc/) exactly at ... ??

(ls /system/etc) was just a command to make sure that install-recovery.sh was in the /system/etc/ folder.

I know this is way off the guide but it's going to be a lot easier this way.
Go to the market and downlaod "ES file manager"
open it,press menu, select settings, scroll to the bottom, choose "root options". Check the top area 'Root Explorer" it will ask which rom choose "hiAPK" Then check "Mount File system" right below. Then go back to the main part of the app. Look for a system folder once inside system, look for etc folder. Inside that you'll see the install-recovery.sh file. Long press on the file either delete or rename it and add a .bak to the file.
I know thats seems like a lot of work but it's going to be easier then fighting with terminal.

Sometimes it takes a few seconds to come up if it doesn't after a little while pull the battery and hold home+volume down+power then when you see the LG screen pop let go. If it still doesn't then, boot fully then either plug your phone into pc or terminal and type
adb reboot recovery <--that's for use with pc.

on terminal it would be
su <--to get the # sign then
reboot recovery

But The File is Already install-recovery.sh.bak

If it's .bak then your all set just skip that long (mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak) command and you should be running a custom recovery in no time.

sooo i dont have to write or type this (mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak) the terminal

Nope you don't have to type it or anything, it's already done since it's install-recovery.sh.bak if it was without the .bak then you still would.

thank you so much for ur patiece and help really i finally got it... is it easy to flash roms

No problem, glad to be able to help. It's easy as pie.
Download either one of the roms, don't extract or anything, place it on your sdcard, not in any folder.
Then reboot into recovery, depending which rom,if it's nRom then you don't have to wipe anything,if it's ThundeRom then we suggest that you wipe everything to avoid any issues. Then choose flash zip from sdcard, choose the zip(Rom) and once it says complete reboot and your running a custom rom.

I used z4root to root my phone instead of on the computer could that be why I can't get into recovery mode

That shouldn't matter. Did you already go thru the process of flash the recovery to your phone? If you did, then did it reboot into recovery fine when your went thru the process?

You have to install the custom recovery before you can backup everything. Good that you already got that in mind. You can use this recovery or the Clockwork recovery that smccloud has posted both work great. Both of them have to be flashed to the phone using the commands provided in the first post of both threads.

Wait so do I need to back up the stock rom because thats what I'm on right now and I havn't ever used a different rom.

You will backup your current stock rom after you get the custom recovery installed, once it's installed you will boot into recovery and make a nadroid backup, which will backup almost everything on your phone now for safe keeping in case you need to return to how your phone is now.
Installing recovery won't cause you to lose anything.
