CyanogenMod 7.1 Alpha 3 Released!

Quick note - I don't recommend CM alpha 3 at the moment in stock form. This will likely change when alpha 4 comes out, but at the moment stock alpha 3 is fairly buggy (it feels even more buggy than alpha 2, actually). Instead, I highly suggest everyone upgrade to the xron-ified version of alpha 3 found here:

[vB1.2][CM7 XRON-ified][CM7.1 Alpha 3][Updated 12/7/2011] - xda-developers

For those of you who are using alpha 3, you may notice a current slew of bugs and an interface that leaves a bit to be desired. Good news is, there's a developer who's been fiddling with the alpha and making it "better". Better youtube support, better video in netflix, better responsiveness, better support right out-of-the-box. Install this and you'll automatically have the right google apps installed for your tablet, e-mail will work out of the box (with notifications when you receive new email), google marketplace will work out of the box, google talk will work out of the box, the keyboard is more responsive, everything looks nicer (it uses a nice honeycomb theme), and battery life is significantly improved. Better yet, it's being updated on a weekly basis and improved upon all the time (incorporating new alpha releases of CM7 as well, so when alpha 4 comes it will also be incorporated into the xron build - the cyano devs have said that alpha 4 will still be a CM7 build, so this is very likely something we'll see soon).

Just do it. You'll love the change.

(ASSUMING YOU ALREADY HAVE ALPHA 3 INSTALLED, OR SOME OTHER ALPHA ANDROID)
Step 1: Download the file at the link above. (grab the most updated version, right now it's vB1.2 as of 12/9/2011)
Step 2: Toss that file onto your touchpad (just put it into USB mode and toss it on the device).
Step 3: Reboot the touchpad into clockwork management.
Step 4: Perform a backup of your current device (there's a backup/restore button, make a backup - it'll only take a few minutes and it'll allow you to return the device to the way it was if you for some odd reason prefer to).
Step 5: Perform a factory wipe (the option is there in clockworkmod).
Step 6: Choose the install from zip option, and install the xron-ified zip file.
Step 7: Reboot into android and enjoy a superior experience.

It's the best android experience available on the touchpad at-present. Give it a shot and I think you'll agree.

I'm having issues with downloading things to the touchpad. The download will start and then fail. I was trying to download the amazon app store apk and it kept failing. Any thoughts?

Can I install this over top of alpha 3 so I don't need to erase anything?

Some people say yes... Just don't perform the factory wipe step... It may not be totally safety to it however. Attempt it at your own risk and make sure you back everything first just in case.

Also I don't see much difference? Netflix video still blocky and we still have WiFi issue with disconnects.

Issues I've noticed with CM7 A3. None of these happened to me in Alpha 2.1:

- The Render FX Widgets, when activated, make the system veerryy slooooow.
- Bringing up the Android browser that's already running (in the background) takes 5+ seconds. Killing it and starting a new one is instantaneous, however. [edit: This problem seems to have disappeared]
- Placing Touchpad on Touchstone causes system to reboot. This happened only once so far.
- Removing USB cable after charging causes reboot. Happened only once so far.
- Render FX Widgets, when activated, do not seem immediately to take effect until the screen is repainted.
- Android browser crashes frequently.
- Haptic feedback no longer works.

I'll be editing this list as I gain more experience with Alpha3.
Well, I thought these new bugs in Alpha3 would be something I could live with. However, it's become annoying especially the frequent browser freezeups/crashes and the really suggish Render FX Widget.

Flashed back to the Alpha2.1 backup that I made and all is good. I'm glad I backed it up before installing A3!

I kept getting the "unable to find device" error for hours, trying one thing after another. I'm not sure what ended up being the magic bullet, but I reinstalled the Universal Novacom driver (after uninstalling a previous version and rebooting after installing), disabled password locking, and then finally tried various USB ports on my PC. During this time, the Touchpad had the bright USB symbol showing the whole time, and novacom -l never showed a connected Touchpad. Windows Device Manager did show the Touchpad connected under Novacon. I would just try connecting the Touchpad to different USB ports and keep trying the boot command until it works. Hope this helps!
