The fix could be as simple as SanDisk, Matsu****a, and Toshiba updating it's priority FAT32 format on their SD card. It is the FAT32 format that must be replaced not the SD card.
I agree with you, but that opens up a whole mess of problems of its own. You would have to keep both formats around in order to support legacy devices, things like DSLRs, etc.... and with two incompatible formats, you're going to see a mess of confused consumers buying the wrong cards, etc. As it stands now, with the different sizes and speed classes, people have a hard enough time buying the right cards, and now you throw "FAT32 or Ext4" at them?
It's a clusterf* if you ask me.... so Google is trying to figure out the best way to get around it without stepping in it too much. I think the next Android release may alleviate some of the pain, based on some rumors that I've read.
They should all just say screw it and slap 128+GB's worth of storage in all the flagships... If you need to store more than that on your phone, you got problems.
