Does the S8/S8+ Use Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 or 4.0

Update: it appears to be QC 3.0. I got my S8+ today and have been playing around with various combinations of cables and chargers. For example, I have this one from Anker that has 2 ports, one 2.0 and one 3.0: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...nker.com%2Fproducts%2FA2224011&token=DQId9BSn . With the right cable (and some ones I got from Monoprice are not the right cable!) I get "fast charging" displaying on my phone only when I plug the phone into the 3.0 port. It just reports "charging" when plugging into the 2.0 port. And it says "slow charging" when plugging into a charger not marked for Quick Charge.
Does it show a difference in what the total charging time will be when you think it is qc3 versus 2 versus neither?

When connected to a QC3.0 charger with the included Samsung cable and the battery at 40%, the S8 is drawing 1A but I haven't found an app that shows the voltage it is drawing so for all I know it is drawing 18V at 1A, which would be QC3, or 1A at 5V which wouldn't even be QC1. That being said, it read 1h 4min to full from 40%.

And how long to full with the stock charger in comparison?

Well, with the battery at 40%, exactly the same amount of time.

I also tried a QC2.0 charger, and the time was again, exactly the same.

In all cases the screen showed "fast charging"

Edited to add: I have a USB-C pass-thru power monitor coming from Amazon on Sunday. I'll take all the measurements then.

Just a note the stock charger reads:

OUTPUT: 5V @ 2A or 9V @ 1.67A

So it appears with the stock charger it can charge at up to 15W.

Since the QC2/3 max current is 18W (and 4 is 28W) this is firmly in the QC2/3 territory. At least it is better than the 10W max of QC1.

That's what I thought too.
You gotta remember that a year old S7 is going to have maybe 80 percent or less of the rated capacity left, so of course it's going to charge faster. I have an old Note 4 battery that can go 0 to 100% in 15 minutes.

Quick charge 3.0 is backwards compatible. So it's probably just utilizing 2.0. I have both QC 2 and 3 charges and there's no difference in the charging speeds that I've noticed. Unfortunately they didn't upgrade the charging speed this year.

It seems to me that anytime it can grab over 1A@5V the S8 is reporting quick charging. I'll do some analysis late tonight and post the results.

I know for sure and many reviewers said s8 has qc 2 and G6 has QC 3
Even my blu life one x2 has QC 3

OK.. Here's the analysis. Used an inline USB-C power meter. Based on this, it appears QC2 is still what's implemented:

All tests performed with battery between 19-21%

QC3.0 Charger: With Screen on -- Charging at 5V and 1.25A (6.25W)
With Screen off -- Charging at 9V and 1.25A (11.25W)

QC2.0 Charger: With Screen on -- Same as above

OEM Included Charger: Same as above

Non QC 2A Charger: Charges at 5V and 1.85A with screen on or off (9.25W)

USB-PD Certified Charger: Charges at 5V and 2.5A with screen on or off (12.5W)

Note that with the QC and Samsung charger, the moment the screen is activated, the voltage drops to 5V. When the screen idles back to the AOD, then the voltage goes back up to 9V.

Also, a USB-PD power supply is going to give you the fastest charging time, interestingly enough.

Once I get a chance, I'll do some longer testing since the meter also measures the total mAh pulled by the phone. I can do some timed tests from the same battery percentage to see how things go.

Interesting that USB-PD gives such higher current. Did that make a difference in overall charge time?

I haven't gotten to do any extended testing. I will do that testing yet. I will try some testing taking the phone from 20-50% with the QC2, Samsung and USB-PD chargers. That'll take some time to do and I won't be able to do it until likely tomorrow some time.

It would say that no matter what because QC 3.0 are backwards compatible with QC 2.0 so it would say Fast Charging either way.

I know that they're backward compatible. What I pointed out is that the phone only reports "Fast Charging" when connected to a QC 3.0 charger, and not to a QC 2.0 charger.

Interesting .. I will have to try it with my QC 2.0 brick when home and see what it shows.

This is not my experience. My phone reported fast charging connected to a QC3, QC2, USB-PD and even plain old 2A USB charger. The only time it didn't was when attached to a 1A or less charger.
