DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

SamuriHL's House of Bionic - SamuriHL's House Of Bionic - DroidRzr.com

9.6 HoB is released. Also, 2 links to the 98.72.22 FXZ have been added. Make sure to read the release page for the HoB if you are on ICS and want to use the 246 Keep Data and root options to prepare for the JB update. I added some functionality that needs to be tested. NO ONE should be using the 98.72.22 FXZ unless you brick your phone as there's no way to recover root once use it.

And 9.7 is out now. Please make sure to review the release notes so I don't have to answer a bunch of support questions.

I'm probably screwed but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. Before I took the JB OTA update I FXZ'd 246 to make sure I didn't have any missing files so the update wouldn't fail. After that, I used Razors edge to root, then got titanium backup to restore my apps and logged into gmail to restore my contacts, etc. I then backed up my root with Voodoo but never updated binaries, didn't think it was necessary. I then took the OTA update which caused me to lose root of course, but now when I try to restore root with Voodoo, it shows the backup exists but when I click restore root it says restored su but still shows unrooted and never gets su permissions. I then connected to terminal and tried the adb shell deal and it says no backup and I am unable to push any files, says read only. I'm assuming I'm screwed like many others but I thought I would ask, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanks...

For those with 'partial' root after JB update - regain root! - xda-developers

I have been following this thread now for several days and the information is wonderful, thank you all. I do have a few questions however if someone can please answer, I would be most grateful.

First off, I am a complete noob when it comes to rooting and such. I have never felt a need to root however, upon hearing that it's likely we can never be able to root unless we root first under ICS 246 with Voodoo and carry root over. For someone who has never rooted and really only uses the basic functionality of the phone and few apps, is it really something I should even worry about? And if it is, is there a place that has simple, step by step instructions to follow?

Secondly, a few days ago people were talking about build 22 failing in testing and some were speculating it may have had to do with ISIS, which makes sense since the Bionic doesn't have NFC. Is this 22 release stable? Does it have ISIS removed, if it was ever in the failed test build to begin with?

Build 22 is fine. The fears were overblown. It has remnants of ISIS but it's been removed and disabled completely which is why it's probably so stable. As for root, it allows things like safestrap and rom'ing, titanium backup, doing things like the entitlement hack to unlock the wifi hotspot app, and many many more things. I'm hesitant to help on this though as I am a little burnt out on support. However, if you can read, read again, and read one more time, my House of Bionic will do all the heavy lifting for you. But I'm not patient when it comes to people that just jump in and then get themselves in trouble so be forewarned.

o) Download the House of Bionic 9.7 installer
o) Download the House of Bionic RSD installer
o) Download the 246 FXZ (NOT!!!! the 98.72.22 FXZ...if you get this wrong, you will never be able to root)

-Install the latest moto driver
-Install the HoB 9.7 installer
-Install the RSD installer
-Create a 246_FXZ directory in the SamuriHL_HouseOfBionic directory on your desktop
-Copy the 246 FXZ zip file into the SamuriHL_HouseOfBionic\246_FXZ directory that you just created
-Connect your phone to USB, make sure USB debugging mode is enabled, and MTP mode is enabled for the USB connection
-Run the HouseOfBionic.bat file
-Select the FXZ options from the main menu
-Select the FXZ Keep Data option and follow ALL instructions
-Under the utility menu on the main menu, there's an option for root

The root option is partially experimental. I've updated the Superuser.apk and su binary to the latest. In THEORY it'll create a su-backup that Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper can use, and it'll also install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.

Now you can install the OTA update. I have a link to that on my House of Bionic download page. Copy this to your sdcard-ext and install it from recovery. Or wait for the OTA to be pushed to your phone. After the OTA is done, use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to restore root. Hopefully.

This process is not tested, but, if it works, it's THE simplest way to do this. I know it seems like a lot, but, believe me, most of it is automated.

What do you mean by, "you will never be able to root if you get it wrong and fxz 22"? There is no way they can get a bionic root exploit for 22? That would suck. Might be time to jump ship.

No OTA here yet, and no particular rush. Thank you all for sharing your experience with the update so far (I'll miss the FM radio, which I do actually use sometimes, and will need to come up with an alternative to a couple of other apps that I use on a regular basis, but smoother performance will be nice to have). I've used Superuser to update the su binary to current and protected root with Voodoo, so I think I'm about as ready as I can be. We'll see how it goes when the OTA arrives!

Whew! I did an abbreviated crash course on how to adb, then followed the instructions from XDA on how to restore a partially rooteded device, and now my wife's phone has root restored. Yea!!!! :)

You haven't been following along with the class, I see. Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. There is *NO WORKING EXPLOIT* for 22. And there may never be. Dan R, the guy behind 99% of the Moto root exploits, quit. There is an effort supposedly ongoing to repurpose a RAZR JB exploit for the Bionic, but, that is by no means guaranteed for success. If it doesn't, we're screwed. So yes, I'm stating, as I have been, that we may never see a root exploit.

Thank you so much Samuri. In your personal opinion from your own experience, do you think someone like me really needs to worry about root?

Also, I know there is always people making ROMs for phones like the Bionic. I have even heard of a 4.2 ROM. Does one need root to install any future ROMs and how will those affect root?

Time to get a unlocked Nexus. I'm done with Motorola.

Yes you need root to do roms.

WARNING: Someone has said the su-backup does not work. Manually create the backup with Voodoo BEFORE taking the update.

My backup code for creating the su-backup from the root exploit does not appear to be working. I'll be looking into it. Make SURE you backup manually with voodoo BEFORE taking the update.

I think i may have one bionic in our family in this state. This is a request for a more specific link to the XDA info about this. I so often get lost and/or distracted over there, and several hours past bedtime i fall asleep on the sofa :o

edit: ignore, found earlier posted link (its been hard to keep up here lately ;-#
