DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

House of Bionic 9.8 is up and should hopefully fix the su-backup creation problem. Still needs to be tested so verify with Voodoo that root is protected after you finish rooting.

Hey Sam, I just wanted to say that you are true American hero. I have learned a lot just from following along from the early HoB days. I posted a few pages back but I never found a solid answer. Is there anyway I can get new governors and I/O schedulers on my phone? (hotplugx and SIO) I used these: [KERNEL MODULE] Extra modules pack v0.1.3 (feat. overclock) [OMAP4 kernel 3.0.8] - xda-developers but every time I tried to run the script I wrote it hangs and reboots. Any help would be swell.

It still doesn't work right. You need to manually protect root if you're going to use this method. I think I know what the last issue is so I should be able to fix it tomorrow. Sucks not being able to test it myself. Sigh.

Not my area of knowledge but I would caution against screwing with that stuff until (if) a root exploit is found. Yes we can fxz... But you'll lose root doing so.

Well my wife bricked her phone. We both have a bionic. I updated her to JB and told her that she cannot fxz back to 246 for any reason. She said her phone was acting weird and she went and did what I told her not to do. I'm so annoyed. Not only that, she flashed the 246 boot.img so now I need the boot.img system image for 22. I extracted the 22 update file and got the boot.img.p file but I do not know how to create the boot.img file from that. I need some serious help before I end up in jail for murder lol. Anyone who knows how to do it or can teach me how so I can fix her F up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah I have a pure rooted stock backup and I am doing all my modding in rom-slot 1, which has let me mess around a bit without any worries. But thanks for the heads up, any idea how hard it would be to get init.d support? Would make running scripts a whole lot easier.

Here are lists of system apps you can safely freeze, and an explanation of what each app does. Freezing system apps can help eek a little more performance and battery life out of a stock setup without too much hassle. The first link is a list for an EU Razr, but a lot of the apps are the same for the Bionic. The second link has a list of apps for ICS and JB 4.1 for the RAZR HD. Here is the process I used:

1.) Running rooted pure stock JB in the stock slot of SafeStrap
2.) Made a backup of stock slot
3.) Created Rom-Slot 1
4.) Restored the backup to Rom-Slot 1
5.) Boot Rom-Slot 1
6.) There is no current root exploit for JB, so do your homework before doing anything!
7.) You are now "safe" or should I say "safer" to tinker without losing our precious, precious root
8.) Use Titanium Backup, Rom Toolbox, or the system app manager to freeze or disable what you please
9.) Reboot and profit

I froze the majority of the apps in the two threads and haven't had any issues over the last few days.
HOWEVER, make sure you know what you are freezing before you do it! You could brick if you freeze something vital!

If you screw up:
1.) Boot back into SafeStrap
2.) Wipe Rom-Slot 1
3.) Restore your rooted stock backup to Rom-Slot 1 and try again.
4.) Worst come to worst, use Samuri's House of Bionic to restore

I had to do some trial and error to get it just right.
I also used Better Battery Stats to keep track of partial wake locks and the like to make sure there weren't any rogue processes.
Keep an eye out for any weird behavior or laggy apps.
I can also post the full list of apps I froze, if anyone wants it.

How do I use this "new and improved" keyboard? I had been using TouchPal Keyboard V5, but wanted to see if the new stock one is any good. If anybody knows how to enable the gesture typing on the stock one, or knows a better keyboard I should install, can you let me know? Thanks!

The 4.1 keyboard doesn't have gesture typing. Gotta get the 4.2 keyboard, I installed this .apk today without any trouble, the keys are tad smaller but gesture typing is great.

Yes you need root to do roms.

WARNING: Someone has said the su-backup does not work. Manually create the backup with Voodoo BEFORE taking the update.

My backup code for creating the su-backup from the root exploit does not appear to be working. I'll be looking into it. Make SURE you backup manually with voodoo BEFORE taking the update.

I followed your directions to the letter and everything seems to have worked. I chose Root from the Utility menu after I did everything else, Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper is installed, however, how do I check to see if my phone is rooted? I assume it's the "Device Rooted" being checked under Voodoo that does it? Root Permission is not checked, should it be, or should it be left unchecked? Also, Protected su copy Available is unchecked as well.

As for backing up the su-backup, how do I do that?

EDIT: Do I need to do anything after installing JB such as using this backup? Also, will doing an FDR after installing JB get rid of root?

As I stated and you quoted my su backup isn't working. There are two things wrong. First superuser isn't being installed properly. Install it from the play store. Second the voodoo backup isn't created properly. You must give it root permission then have it protect root. You must do this before you update or you'll lose root.

Very long time lurker, first time poster on this subject. I got the Bionic way back in late October/November of 2011 and will be eligible for an upgrade soon. I just wanted to thank Sam (and all the others) for all the work on the Bionic. I am very disappointed that we will never have a truly unlocked phone, but I know that is Verizon/Motorola's fault and no one else's. I just wanted to recount my experience with the JB update. To start with, my phone is/was rooted with Safestrap and Superuser, but was on the stock ICS build. I followed the recommendation of using Voodoo to save/keep root during the upgrade. I got the "logwrapper" error in side\tmp.zip message when trying to install the JB update. After a little research, I found some people stating Safestrap's recovery might be the issue. I uninstalled recovery (not Safestrap, just the recovery components) and the JB update worked just fine. I am still rooted and was able to reinstall recovery after the update.

Thanks again to Samuri:D for making it so simple for people to update and go off the official update path on the Bionic. Because of the simplicity of the tools and the safety net of (nearly always) being able to FXZ back to a stock state, I have tried many of the 'leaked' ICS updates and have never had any problems getting back on the stock path. If only we could truly unlock the phone, I'd be running Cyanogenmod.

I was able to successfully upgrade and keep my root with Voodoo OTA.

However now I face the issue of not having LTE. I have it set to LTE/CDMA/EVDO and it just stays at gray signal bars. Anyone have a solution?

I'm missing something here, not yet heard of the su v superuser naming issue.

Non-issue. Had tried to do this in Total Command. Tried in Root Explorer, mount as R/W when it balks, success. Also discovered I hadn't checked "Root Functions Everywhere" in Total Command.

FM radio tuner app no longer works on jb. Anyone else? Browser app keeps force closing when inputting text. Anyone else?

FM uninstalled by OTA. (?) Tried installing FM again, it installed but didn't do anything. I guess the radio firmware from JB is not compatible.

I've released HoB 9.9 that SHOULD finally fix all the damn su-backup issues. Still untested cause, well, I can't do my own testing, but, I'm fairly confident I got all the remaining bugs. What a pain. Those on ICS will have a much easier time if they wanna keep root during the OTA....simply run the 246 FXZ Keep Data option, root with the House of Bionic, verify in voodoo ota rootkeeper (automagically installed during root...I hope) that su is protected, take the update, restore root in voodoo ota rootkeeper when done. That's the theory anyway.

My apologies. I thought the su backup was created in Voodoo.
