I'll certainly look for that. Still, not sure I'm completely comfortable doing that yet.

Not going to be a lesser phone by any means. Ignore Ghost....that'll be mid-range and not really what most of us are looking for (think Nexus 4 with LTE). The X phone should be what a lot of us are looking for spec wise. Only question is whether we can get an unlockable version of it. That question isn't satisfactorily answered for me. Not yet.
 
Just think this time 6months from now will be in the Xphone KLP update thread :p

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.
 
Am I the only one that reads these posts (not just this thread but anything to do with Android OS updates) and gets the impression that:

Get new phone > Greatest thing ever

6 mo later, update announced > Current OS now deemed lacking and chomp at the but for update

Get update > Greatest update ever

See new phone > Current awesome phone now a piece of junk

Get new phone > Lather, rinse, repeat.

Seems people can't be happy with what they have (assuming it works of course) when something new comes out. I'm starting to like the Apple announcement model mentioned earlier in the article on OS update timeframes of develop and perfect the OS in secret, then announce it when ready and update within days.

It's really not secret though. People know it's coming. If apple users that cared about updates thought one was coming, and then it didn't, then they would freak out. I think the key word of your post though is "perfect." They release a new os when they know it's going to work well. furthermore, most normal users don't care about updates...usually. They only care about getting an update if their phone isn't working. Apple doesn't have this problem, as their stuff usually just works. Android has this problem much more often. I learned this concept just recently with the RAZR and d4 updates. Both my brother and wife (RAZR), and my coworker (d4) didn't know about their respective update. In fact, my wife even complained because the font was different (maybe she should work at vzw...). They didn't care, they just want their stuff to work.

I can see it's tough developing for Android, compared to apple. Most people that want freedom go to Android for that freedom, because they know apple won't give it to them. So Android developers are stuck between developing for the silent majority, or us, the squeaky wheel. True, a great developer would do both at the same time, which is where i think the nexus devices are going, reaching both markets. So in the end, i can't remember my point and wish i would have opened my laptop to write this post. Google, just take over my life, and give me a new pair of glasses.

Exactly! I've tried to bring my wife over to the Android side but she hates her Razr and gets frustrated at any little hiccup and really cares very little about customization.

Sam, would Motorola/verizon have different standards or specifics on 4.1.* on different phones.

To clarify: Would we Bionic owners have the exact same functionality as say the RAZR m owners with the same android version? Or is it as varied as the device?

In theory Moto did all the OMAP4 builds (d4, razr, and bionic) off the same engineering build so they should all be identical. In reality, there was different requirements for each build in terms of what VZW wanted included. So while they SHOULD all be identical, they won't be. And you REALLY should be thankful for that IMO. The RAZR build *SUCKS*. Dropped calls, missing widgets, widgets not updating, etc, etc plague that release. Ours will be smoother as they've had more time to refine it. Same situation as the ICS release.

The good Doctor mentioned the Razr M (not an OMAP build), and there may well be some differences there. I've spent some time browsing some forums of most of the Moto/VZW phones that have received JB (some got 4.1.1 and some 4.1.2) and as Sam has often said, the Razr/Maxx got a crappy build.

There are far more issues with 4.1.1 on all forums about them than I see on Razr M, and even the D4. That said, I'm hopeful that build 23 (or whatever # ends up released for our Bionics) will be far more polished than what the Razr/Maxx folks have had shoved at them.

The number of devices sold of different types could have some effect on the number of complaints/issues that surface on the forums, but it seems to me that the D4 and Razr M got better builds.
 
I ignored the RAZR M comment for a reason. You can't compare phones on different architectures. It's like comparing the Bionic JB build to an S3. While the moto phones may share Blur, nothing else is going to be the same. That's why I focused on answering from an OMAP4 perspective as they are all similar hardware. The builds are much closer there, but, still quite different. Even though they all came from the same engineering build.
 
I know this is repetitive, but the last series of posts warrants another Thank You to Sam for all the insightful information! :-)
