I've never heard a great answer to this question. Most the time it seems just the easy response to say: "I hate Blur, TW, Sense." Personally I like skins because it gives each manufacturer their own identity within Android.
I don't mind "skins" either. I want a Motorola phone to be a Motorola phone, just like I want a Samsung phone to be a Samsung phone... just like I want a Google phone to be a Google phone.
Plus, as an open source OS, all of these customizations and forks are a big part of the "spirit" of Android.
If Android wasn't meant to be customized, Android wouldn't be open. Also, some of the customizations done by the OEMs get picked up by AOSP as well. The software "innovation" going on within the Android ecosystem isn't just happening within AOSP.
