DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

I'm not expecting miracles, just a somewhat smoother interface and less herky-jerkiness. I'd be satisfied with that. Google Now is what I really want.

I veRy rarely see any 'herkyjerk', and having tried GNow find it 'fluff', at least for my lifestyle, so will be taking a pass, at least for a while. When my lady's bionic fell 3 versions behind I was pleased to find that all the updates were still OTR available, many months later, when I figured out why hers wasn't seeing the update and fixed that. I'm counting on that so I can update for resale purposes, or good ol' fxz.

I am clinging to the very outside hope that I will be bumped up to 1.2Ghz since I missed the last one. But I know it is doubtful..

I've not noticed any user experience difference going from 1 gHz -> 1.2 gHz on my bionic.

FWIW

Edit: I snipped content from the post I was quoting and the forum system removed the original poster's I'D.
Hmmmm

Ditto. Then again, I'm on Eclipse ICS and it's slimmer and faster than stock ICS. I had Google Now for a while, but didn't find it useful, so I removed it. The only waiting I'll be doing in relation to JB is for a root exploit and AOSP-esque JB ROM to pop up.

BTW, while VZW is working on VoLTE this year, 1xRTT and EV-DO will likely be around in some way up until around 2021.

Updated: Verizon Wireless to sunset 2G and 3G CDMA networks by 2021 - FierceWireless

The more important play I see is by mid 2014 when more devices launch with just 4GLTE and no fall-back to 1xRTT or EV-DO. It'll probably be 700MHz and 1700MHz only for LTE on Verizon for awhile.

There's more to it than what's publicly known. That's all I can really say about it. There is a REASON they're pushing LTE so hard. I suspect you'll see 3G sunsetted before that time frame. ;)

So are they going to need to make all their tower LTE? I know up in the mountains I don't get LTE, just regular CDMA. I'm concerned that making phone calls may become less available when the switch is made.

They'll be done with LTE by the end of the year. They're pretty close now. Basically by the end of this year LTE will cover all their 3G area completely. I get your concern but let's see what the end of the year brings.

Cool. How does "roaming" work now a days? If I'm not on Verizon network do I currently go on someone else's network? And then, when I own a phone that is only VoLTE, will it still pick up other people's network?

Just last night I did the *#etc thingie and tested the 1x and EVDO with success on data along with GSM and 'other things'.

Other people's LTE network yes. Maybe even GSM. Not sure how that's going to work. I've not been in a "roaming" area in forever on VZW. LOL.

We were up at our cabin in the mountains of Idaho this last weekend and noticed that we picked up a 4g signal for the first time. We have always been 3g. I guess that explains why we noticed the change.

Yup. They're working hard to finish up the transition. You'll see a lot more outskirt areas getting turned on in the coming months.

Does the LTE transition have any effect on why you are making the doomsday call with regard to the unlimited data plans ending soon?

Meanwhile, if you're 'on the fringe', it's all holy h### for reliable data as your device keeps sniffing and attempting to latch over to the .5 bar 4G over in town.

Lets hear it for the *#etc thingie so I can lock it to 3G until...

They may be working hard on the "outskirts", but existing suburban areas still have pockets of no4G. I'm in the L.A. area, and the town I work in (Alhambra), only a few miles east of downtown, gets 3G only, yet the next town over is excellent 4G.

VZW suggested we (my company) pay "them" to upgrade their local tower. Our executive director told them to "pound sand" and that we'd go to a different provider on our next company-wide refresh of devices.

The FTC & FCC should get a copy of that conversation, especially if it's in some way 'traceable'. :sly:

The doomsday call. LMAO. It should be obvious to anyone who's tried to keep unlimited and all the hoops you have to jump through that VZW has wanted to nuke that phrase from the collective mindset of all customers since they took it away. Think about it this way....if you have unlimited LTE and can tether, what incentive do you have to pay a cable or phone company for internet? You're getting the same speed as you would from one of those services. However, using that much bandwidth off a tower isn't good for them or anyone else connected to that tower. Hence, removal of unlimited since the advent of LTE, yes.

Yea, that's been a complaint from people living on the fringe of an LTE area since the beginning. The only solution, of course, is to make LTE coverage 100%. Soon enough.

Will Voodoo keep my root after updating to JB?

No guarantees, but, it should. It has for every other Moto phone that's gone to JB (read all of them...we're last. LOL)

Didn't mean to suggest it wasn't going on, we all know that you are right that unlimited plans are going the way of the dinosaur.:D
