Droid Bionic Not Released Before Tiered Data Plans!

For a fact, if you renew after tiered prices take effect, you will not have an option for unlimited data. My guess with a family data pack would be that you are agreeing to take all your phones under the the family pack contract, thereby allowing Verizon to alter your wife's unlimited contract early.

That would be my guess. But, would I be forced to a family data plan or just be fored to have a tiered pricing data plan on my line? With contracts on a per-line basis, if we're both forced into a family data plan, how does that effect her upgrade date? And could she opt-out with no ETF since the contract was changed? Lots of questions for me on how this will all be implemented. Unfortunately, I probably won't know the answers until after it's implemented.

2 cents worth

For those who don't use much data (or think they will)... You may use a lot more data with a 4G phone, heck, that?s what it is for, stream media, better faster apps / data. I have had a Charge for 2.5 weeks and have used around 4GB of data. I have only streamed about 6 -7 HULU shows and streamed XM a couple of hours . (plus the normal check mail, browse bank accounts, weather, stuff like that.) Video can eat it up, and I HATE to think what will happen if NETFLIX moves to the rest of the Android phones... Will chew up data quick! But again, that?s what these phones are advertized to do... So once you get your hands on a 4G device, it does / will take self discipline to control your data... It?s just too easy to 'get to stuff' now.... So watch out!

Is there still going to be a $10 per month fee for LTE on top of that?

I'm interested in seeing what the family rates will be as well because if someone else on the plan upgrades and everyone has to get pulled in, then it will be an issue.

I can say this, my early reaction is I'm really pissed about the changes. I love how this is happening before the phones that everyone has been waiting on. Going to depend on the fine details, but I know all too well how much Verizon loves to screw customers over for money. I might be getting the Charge as well depending on what Verizon says.

I think that MOTO is going to be just as upset about this as the rest of this. Just a guess but I see a lot of people grabbing LTE phones pre Tiered Data now that we know it is coming before the Bionic, Moto just got a nice smack in the face. Maybe they deserved it though? who knows...

So whats your plan?

So whats your plan?

I will probably hold off until the Bionic is Released to make up my mind (my contract will be up by then). It will break down like this, when the Bionic is released I will go to Verizon and tell them I have been a loyal customer for over 12 years, if they want to loose me over Tiered Data plans then I will either be going to T-Mobile or Sprint. I will let them make the decision for me.

smart move, it doesn't hurt to try.

EDIT: 3 pages of replies in less than 3 hrs. wow.

You can't sign up on a contract which is no longer legally offered by Verizon. That will absolutely not happen. Nice try, but you have three choices. Get unlimited now, wait for Bionic and pay more, or switch to a new carrier. This is all just assuming that these prices are correct and true.

T-Mobile might be considered unlimited, but don't forget that they will throttle you waaayyyy back once you hit the high-speed cap that you are paying for.

At this point I'm thinking of getting a Charge now to stay in the unlimited category and when the Bionic comes out I'll just pay full price for it and sell the Charge to someone for about $250-$300 and that will end up being like getting the Bionic on contract and still having unlimited LTE. My solution, anyway...

I've been a customer for much longer and when I called the day after one year plans ended they did not budge for me when I tried to see if there was anything they could do.

Understand this one fact, Verizon does not care about you....at all. They want your money, but they don't care about trying to help you out and making life easier. They know they offer the best network and believe that alone will keep people from leaving. What they don't understand is they are now hitting that breaking point where their prices are beginning to negate whatever benefits you get from their network over others.

This is true. I recently called them to complain about getting 0 signal inside the building I work at, hoping they could at least offer some solution, but they flat out told me there was nothing they could do and that they didn't have any guarantees of good service. We have at least 20 people in this office alone on Verizon, and we're the laughing stock of ATT/T-Mo folks because they get respectable signal while we're SOL. While I won't say their network is inferior to other carriers just because of the lack of signal here, the fact they just don't care tells me enough.

Haha, you called them because you didn't get signal inside your building? What did you expect them to do? Magically fix it?

Of the above I agree completely.

What they don't understand is they are now hitting that breaking point where their prices are beginning to negate whatever benefits you get from their network over others.

This I disagree with.

As much as it saddens me, the reality is that VZW knows that the overwhelming majority of their customers will hear about the new plans from the store rep, will ask where they are at now, the rep will pull up their account and tell them, ?well over the last 5 months you used an average of 400MB of data so you will not see any changes to your account.?

Thus the average customer will sign a new contract and walk out the door happy that they got a shiny new phone.

The reality is that people on these boards use a ton more data than the ?average customer.? (The sad part is that very few of them will never even bother to realize that they should be mad that they are not getting a price cut as a result of it?)

We still don't know for sure that the Bionic will be out after the tiered data takes effect so there is still time...we can still hold out hope...

Hope walked out the door at 10:38 this morning. Sorry bud. I think I am going to have to settle for the Charge. I will just be using too much data to risk not locking in unlimited. Wife was sympathetic and said we could try to buy the bionic off contract but then I told her what the charge and revo were going for off contract she said sorry LOL. Heck by the time my next 2 yr pricing comes up (not to be confused with the going away NE2 additional discount) there will probably be quad cores out and who knows where I will be stationed at (i.e. if sprint or att have good signal where I get moved to and swap carriers). I just think that this put the last nail in the coffin for me not being able to get the bionic. Sad thing is I have been singing its praises at work and now I have to settle for something else.:'(

My sentiments exactly!

You took all the words right out of my mouth. I guess its decision time. Hate having to make it under pressure and knowing it isn't what I originally wanted. Leaning towards the Charge right now. When next renewal is up I'm hoping that there is more viable competition to Verizon.

I see where you are coming from, but the question then becomes how long will these "average" customers keep on the lower end of the spectrum? Phones are getting used more often and the apps and amount of data being used are increasing as speeds increase that can accommodate bigger and better things . Verizon keeps pushing things that involve streaming, even the regular user that uses little data now is bound to start using those bloatware apps and they won't be too happy when they start seeing their data usage rise along with their bill. Your average user is also the person willing to jump ship to a cheaper priced plan on another network if they believe the signal in the areas they will frequent will be fine. I know a bunch of people on Verizon and a lot of them have been thinking about leaving because of the high price plans. The network is better, but they are getting charged huge sums of money in comparison to friends who get more for less in their plans on other carriers and experience only minor network issues at most of the same places. Depending on the areas you are in, Verizon might not really offer you that much of an advantage. Lastly we need to start considering that while we are the exception on these boards, that is starting to change. More and more of the younger generations are being raised with cell phones and are used to using them for a lot of things. We are the people that are going to start making up a majority of the customer base eventually, and our reactions on here are a good indication of what a larger percent of the market is going to think when they see some of the plan prices. Of course what I realize is that I am looking too far ahead and we are still a bit away before the average user is like all of us, but the trend is going in that direction. Really what makes us different on here is we are a bit more fanatical about finding the right phone and making sure we are getting the latest and the greatest.

You did bring up a great point, people should be pissed that their not even saving any money now with the new tiers. I'm going to pay the same, but instead of unlimited I only get 2 GB. I had hoped that the lowest tier would cost a little less than what I pay now. The way they did the tiering is a joke and a slap in the face to customers.
