dumb newb question about apps & wifi

I just noticed whenever I am connected to WiFi, my espn Scorecenter widget/app and my Facebook widget stop working. Is there any way to avoid this while still having the Wifi connection active? Or do I have to turn it off whenever I want to use a 3G app? Why am I able to make phone calls while connected to WiFi but not get the 3G access?

also, i am now unable to browse the web despite an active wifi connection. Could there be a setting I have incorrect causing these issues? Browsing in 3G works fine albeit slowly.

this is my first smartphone so I am sure I must be overlooking something? Or is it just a matter of fact that some apps/widgets just do not work over WiFi? What about web surfing, that should work though right? Something seems off.
