First impressions (no S-notes)

Hopefully the phone, website, and email icons will function as does "link to action".

For the hell of it, I just installed Samsung Notes on my N5. I don't know if "smart Samsung Notes" is supposed to be a feature of Samsung Notes or a separate app, but I can't find anything in the app that would trigger those icons to appear. Here's what happened when I wrote a phone number, website and email address. Maybe someone else might have more luck than I did. Crossing fingers!

Was thinking...maybe this "smart Samsung Notes" is what they were planning last year, when in the play store review replies they kept promising Action Memo to be added to Samsung Notes by Sep...Oct...Nov... :(

I tried the same thing a few days ago with the same results. I'm hoping to get a chance to run back by my Verizon store and give this a try on the Note8 in store. If so you can bet I'll report back.

So I'm thinking this might be an option that we will see in an updated version. I stopped off at my Verizon store today and checked the display Note8. It's not a function I could find in Samsung Notes. I'm just hoping it is coming in an update soon.

Ugh... They keep playing with our emotions! Why post photos of something that isn't available? Something you'd know your patrons used if u took a second to look. Maybe the demos dont offer full functionality. I'm hoping against hope here. Lol

I stopped by my local Verizon store today just to have a few minutes hands on time with the new Note 8.

I'm surprised a bit by the shape, I was uncertain about the new thinner, taller profile. I have to say I like it a lot. It felt very good in hand, as best I could tell with the security tether attached.

I went straight to the app drawer to see if I could find S-notes with no luck. I kinda expected this to be the case. So I opened Samsung Notes and I'm definitely disappointed that it doesn't seem to have been changed much from the version on my Note 7. If any of you remember, Samsung Notes is a joke compared to S-notes. I hope I'm wrong and I can find the same Action Memo type features baked in or on the way. I still have the S-notes apk that worked on the Note 7. I'm hoping it will work on the 8 also.

That sucks, I did enjoy s-note in the past and didn't have enough time with Samsung note when I had the note 7 to give a good evaluation. It won't effect me much though because these days I've been heavily invested in Microsoft OneNote since the note 5.

I enjoy the fact that I can use OneNote on my phone, edit notes on my laptop and then view on my tablet all seemlessly. That's something I could never do with s-note or Samsung note.

While in BB this evening for something else, I opened the Samsung Note app on the N8. Three reps were standing near trying to figure out what I was attempting to accomplish. None of them had ever heard of "Action Memo" or "Link to Action", nor had they ever handled an S-pen. I quickly found Samsung Notes and entered a phone number. The trick is once the note is written is to hover over the note with your S-pen. The phone icon immediately popped up, I clicked on it, and the number appeared in the phone dialer. I'm such a happy camper. :)

I downloaded the N8 manual last night, hoping against hope that I'd find some reference to "link to action". For me, like those of you whom have posted here, this is the single most useful feature of the S-pen and the reason that I went back to the N5 after having to part with the N7. I just got off the phone with a Samsung rep and now have reason to hope that we have not been abandoned. She first said that we'd be able to download S-Notes from the Play store but then she dug deeper and found this:

This could make a difference as far as how I feel about Samsung Note. All Samsung has to do is Stop taking away features and improve upon what is already there.

I'm also a big fan of Onenote. I use it daily across all devices. I've also started using Google docs a bit more lately. It works great for the sheets I need to use across several devices.

The S-notes app was great for jotting a quick note, phone number or email address. Having link to action just made it that much better. I will make it work as best I can.

I work from my phone a large part of the day, every day. The Note is the best device for me to help keep me on track and get things done. I also just got a Samsung DeX. I can't wait to play around with it and see just how much I can do without having to use Windows.

Thank you for that ray of hope! I still loathe the entire app vs S Note, but if sideloading it & its components doesn't work (like it didn't when I installed it all at VZW), at leastcwe can get back a few functions. When I have time I do intend to write to Samsung at the email Connert provided a page or so ago.

For reasons unknown Samsung starting dumbing down the Note series with the 5.
The Note 5 is a great phone and I'm not going to go into all the features they eliminated. I would sound like a broken record. But that's when they started deprecating their line.

Floor models aren't fully functional units that's probably why it wouldn't install. I'm pretty sure sideloading will work but not 100% sure.

It did install, but crashed every time I opened and tried anything. But hoping you're right, that something in the demo unit may have been missing or deactivated. Gonna try to be patient, at least until I, and more folks have them in hand. Hopefully someone gets this figured out, I hate the damper this is putting on buying this phone for me :(

I hear ya. Why cant they just add to/improve what's already there. I don't think S Note needed to be replaced with something less capable.

Question from someone who hasn't used S Notes much. Doesn't Microsoft OneNote provide similar functionality?

Yes and no. The truly big issue for those of us that are doing all the whining is Action Memo & Link to Action. If you watch the video you'll see. It's been a part of what makes a Note a Note for a lot of us for a long time.

Thanks. I watched the video. I definitely get it now.
